While chasing my kids around the mall the other day I noticed while in the Arcade there was a machine in the very corner that was unplugged. Being the curious one that I am and looking for a way to distance myself from the mass of kids I walk over and look at it. It was a game where you control a arm that moves up and down and also travels x and y knocking coins off a platform. I have looked at all the "crane" type games and they are all basically friction drive with rollers riding on a shaft with no height control. The arcade owner said the game worked but was outdated and didnt even pay for the electricity that it used each month.
Upon further inspection the X and Y is driven by cog belts. I could not tell what moved the "sweeper arm" up and down though.
Basically I can get this machine for a song and was wondering if it would be a decent start for the son and I to learn CNC. I don't figure the stepper motors will be up to the task of moving a torch around. Short of software it should be a good start I would think.
If nothing else I will have a Arcade game for less than a 100 bucks.
What yall think?
