    EMI-MEC AutoSprint E turret lathe

    Greetings All!
I was wondering if I could get some input/suggestions from the community on a lathe project that I’m considering.
I have an EMI-MEC AutoSprint E turret lathe. The problem lies within its’ method of motion. It uses a hydraulic-pneumatic system for all axis motion, which is troublesome when seals leak causing air to enter the hydraulic system which in turn cause erratic actuation of the cross slides and turret.
I’ve been considering replacing the hydraulic-pneumatic system with stepper/servo driven ballscrews. Or just cut my losses and replace it with an another machine.
    What do you think?

Funny I am coming at this from a different perspective: the hydraulics should give excellent driving force and holding force once in position, with a servo driving hydraulics pump, solenoids driving the directional valves and a linear scale to reference against would give me almost exactly what I want.

3.5 inches is not something I could live with however, certainly not in the Z :-)

My only experience of hydraulic axis drive is on J&S grinders which must be a 70 year old design but the motion is great.

Really interested to hear if anyone has converted an EMI-MEC AutoSprint?

    kind regards,

    Jon

If your interest is still relevant, drop me a note. This was one of my projects when I worked at World Wide.
