    Issue with TNG on Linux

For several reasons - on one of the PCs I use for my CNC machines - I decided to migrate from Win 10 to Linux, so I downloaded TNGV2 for Linux64 and installed it on a Debian 12 distro. I have many problems:

    - I can't activate the ethernet connection previously used on Win 10 with the MK3/9 controller in any way. I tried all the ways and configurations, fixed IP and DHCP. I use the direct connection, without going through a router. Not only is the controller not detected, but as soon as I insert the ethernet cable TNG freezes and I have to restart the system. The USB connection works regularly.

    - At the first launch of TNG, but when I go to file>open, TNG freezes. Also in this case, restart the system and then, at the second launch of the program, it works.

    - I can't export the profile in any way (file>export profile). TNG freezes and I have to restart the system, but, in this case, the problem persists.
In any case, when TNG crashes, I can't exit the program, and I have to do ctrl>alt>del
In the next few days I will try to replace Debian 12 with Ubuntu, but I don't know if this is a solution.

Can anyone help me? May be PlanetCnc team?

Re: Issue with TNG on Linux

I'm running two machines on linux, both ubuntu desktop.

Ethernet never gave me any issues, you have to ensure that you configured your network card correctly on the linux side. I have mine running with fixed IP since day 1 and never had any issues related to that.

The "freezing" issue when going to file->open is something that I'm experiencing as well. However its not every time. Some days go by without it happening at all, on others any time I open a file. Its not freezing as in never recovering, it just freezes for a few minutes (which feel like years) and then continues to work normaly out of a sudden. I was never able track it down. Its not TNG version related (one is running an rather old 20221211, the other one the latest 20240916) It seems to be more linux version related, I never had this issue one year back, with some linux update the issues started, but I never identified which one.

I never used the export profile function, personally I don't understand why it even exists. The profile is there in the file system, just zip it together with OS tools.

Today I'll return near to my machine with the laptop on which I installed Ubuntu 24.04 and TNG. We'll see what happens after connecting it to the controller. I'll let you know

I don't see any advantage to not using a router, and I suggest that you add a router. Aside from a dedicated router (only router function), there are many available combo devices that have wifi access points and include a configurable router function.

Add a router, and set static IPs for the CNC machines.

Today I've tried with new Ubuntu. Nothing, nothing, nothing..
At this point, I've reconnected the previous Win 10 PC with TNG 2024-01-02 release, and it works perfectly: static IP on the computer, it connect immediately the controller.
I don't know why I have to use a router, considering that the direct ethernet connection It has been working for 3 years under Win 10.
@ScorpionTDL: please, can you post a screenshot with your working ethernet setting under Ubuntu?

There is a problem is settings. Selecting network controller sometimes freezes.
I'm just making new release 2025-04-09 with this bug fixed.

Re: Issue with TNG on Linux

Can you please make the downloads of previous versions available and not just the latest update? When an update, like in this case, does not work and, after reports, you release 2 more in a few days, there must be a possibility to go back to a stable version. It would be better to test the updates a little longer and more thoroughly before releasing them. Or at least, release them as a beta version, so that the user knows that they can run into problems.
This time I wasted several days trying to understand where the problem was with the ethernet connection, installing and reinstalling TNG several times and, even, the operating system, only to discover here, that it was a bug in the version. Maybe, fewer updates, but more solid.
Too many times I see written "the problem will be fixed in the next release"...
I use, on my hobby machines, 4 PlanetCnc controllers (2 MK3/9 + 2 MK3/4 and an indefinite amount of various cards, opto, output, etc) on different machines, and I can't go crazy when I update them.
I repeat, the ideal situation would be:
beta version, and after a group of volunteers have tested the program and reported the problems, a final version that is stable and long-lasting.

    1. Previous Versions: We always make previous stable versions available for download. If you ever need a specific one, feel free to reach out or check the designated download section.

    2. Beta Testing: A beta version was released more than a month prior to the latest update. All issues reported during that period were addressed before the public release. We're always open to more users participating in beta testing to catch edge cases earlier.

    3. Issue Resolution: We treat bug reports with high priority and resolve them as quickly as possible. Only new features or major changes are scheduled for future versions.

    4. Support Commitment: I take great pride in the speed and quality of the support I provide - it's a priority for me to help users promptly and thoroughly. While I understand the frustration that bugs can cause, I do ask that feedback remain constructive so we can work together to improve things.

    5. Network Issue: The core network functionality was working correctly. The issue was specifically related to a settings component, and as soon as the problem was reported, I began testing and investigating immediately. For future cases, please provide as much detail as possible when describing the issue - it helps us isolate and resolve it more effectively.

I genuinely appreciate your feedback and understand your concerns. Our goal is always to deliver stable, high-quality software, and with the help of users like you - especially when participating in beta testing - we can continue to improve.

Re: Issue with TNG on Linux

First of all, thanks for the reply.
I really appreciate your fantastic products and your support, even if, having a more mechanical approach, I encounter many difficulties in the parts of the software that are more oriented towards customization through techniques and programming languages ??(scripts, expressions, oWord, Python, etc.) that I do not know well and that perhaps prevent me from using certain parts of the product to the fullest. Hence my frequent requests for conversational wizards and shortcuts that are more oriented towards the user, rather than towards the programmer capable of mastering complex languages. But I see that often the program updates go mainly in that direction, and perhaps I am the one who, at a certain point, should stop and stay with the release that I am comfortable with.

P.S. In the download section I can only see the penultimate release of the software. Am I doing the wrong search?

I completely understand where you're coming from, and I totally agree.

To create helpful wizards, shortcuts, and other user-friendly tools, strong scripting support is essential - it's the foundation that makes those features possible. While many of our updates lean toward expanding customization and scripting capabilities, it's precisely so that we (and users) can build more intuitive, flexible tools on top of that.

Many system integrators are actively using these tools to develop tailored solutions for their clients, and the flexibility they provide is a real strength of the platform.

I do recognize that community-driven add-ons haven’t really taken off yet, but I still believe in the potential. That’s why I continue to expand the scripting tools and improve documentation - and I’m always here to offer direct support to anyone who wants to explore them. Whether you're deep into coding or just starting out, I’m happy to help you get the most out of the system.
