    Moulding head questions

    Hello good people.

I have upcoming project that requires me to run a moulding cutter in my main spindle to cut a chunky bead around some solid timber (oak).
Cutter tool is with custom ground inserts (removable), 86mm diameter body, 20mm shank.

I've never tried this, no idea what methods are used in running this beast in solid wood. Speeds, Passes , etc.

Machine is SCM Author 430s, Xilog/Genio.

I doubt very much i can go slow full depth cut (oak panel 42mm thick, about 15mm into the part edge, 1000mm radius 180deg arc). Thrown into the deep end with this...

    Any advice is appreciated.

Cutter tool diagram (ignore insert, its a bit different)

    Re: Moulding head questions

I have no idea how you would do it but I would suggest you make sure you are standing behind some form of shield when the machine is running. It might be sensible to use more than one pass and then move a bit closer to the panel with successive passes.I would also anticipate some amount of chipping out occurring as you won't be able to use the false fence that is more traditionally used with moulding operations.Remember that wood grows on trees and CNC programmers don't.
