Need parts: Gooseneck & Clip on clamps/screw bar clamps, padded

Hey Guys & Gals!

Kinda stuck here as I don't know the Names of what I'm looking for, so, hopefully ya'll can help, if you can.

Need these two parts, quantity helps, though since this is all prototype, costs must be kept down to a minimum. (You'd think that would go without saying, but guess what!)

Gooseneck or Goose neck, about 12 inches long and slim, and

Attachment to either a clip on clamp, or screw tighten on a bar clamp.

The idea is not to scratch the finish on the laptop monitor.

Get the picture? Yes, I've developed a lamp that hooks to the top of a laptop, and would like to test market a few. Now, I could use a heavy gauge wire slipped into a clear plastic tube to serve as the gooseneck, and I just might do that for the first few or so...

So you've developed a product but have no prints, prototypes or even pictures? I can come up with my own wildly complex part, call it a gooseneck and your quote will be several thousand dollars for one.

If you think you have a viable product, you need to take this a little more seriously. If you don't know what to call it, make a name up and stick with it. Machinists don't car what something is called or what it does. Just supply a print and solid model and you'll get quotes.

If you don't have the ability to make prints/solid models, then THAT is the first RFQ you need to post.

And just so you know, you mentioned "cheap" twice, which means that several high quality shops have lost interest immediately.

Ok, what gives? Every time I post something like this I get jumped on. Also since Matt never backs me up anymore I invite you to stone him while I stand there and watch.

Here is a way of stating the obvious with out flat out agreeing with this Matt guy. Back in days gone by the "inventor" either spent his own money developing his product and test marketed it, got a "venture capitalist" to invest in the product for a large percentage of the profits per written contract or "sold" his idea and had nothing further to do with it.
Fast forward to the recession of 2007-2011 (yes it hasn't gone away) so many machine shops small to large ran out of work from their normal customers and were forced to find new ones. Add this to the fact that it seems machinist is the only profession where people attempt
self-employment in the middle of a down turn, and there were way more shops looking for work than customers needing work done. Like a 50% off sale at K-Mart shops started doing unprecedented things to court customers as their old methods of getting new business did not work. I have done things I haven't done in the past but most of that centers around phone calls, research and not marking up outside processes. I will admit I toss in passivating stainless I make for no extra charge. The actual cost of passivating is pennies for solution and a little electricity. Other shops have freely admitted to free shipping, free fixturing, free programming, etc,etc.
So all that said it wouldn't be too far fetched to find someone willing to bear the time and costs of getting a product to market with only a verbal promise of getting the production run if the item sells. A big risk some people are willing to take in this poor economy. The OP would be laughed off the planet 5 years ago or beyond, but in this day and age I bet he has already got PMs on this project.

Any "High-Quality" shop that doesn't care about price doesn't need to be making my dollars. Heck, there are lots of skilled Chinese that can do the exact same thing, only a lot cheaper than over-priced American Labor that has priced itself out of world markets - ALL the world markets - Globally.

I'm not just being critical, it's the cause of the High Debt the United States has created for herself when in 1970 she decided to go with a Minimum Wage. Now, the US cannot compete in world markets when guys in Detroit are getting $75 an hour for a $7 and hour job. Try putting 2 + 2 together to see what you get.

Enough ranting.

I have a working demo that's been working for about a week now. Still waiting on more parts to come it.

You don't need a drawing or picture of such a simple thing. Just want to connect a gooseneck to the top of a laptop computer, a clip would be nice, and the other end to an acrylic box or polycarbonate box. Glass is out of the question.

Is that so difficult?

Now, back to ranting.

I spend hours of my time pouring over catalogs, Internet sites, and eBay to find the cheapest source of materials that are of the quality that I'm looking for. And everything that I produce - with the Will of God & Jesus - comes out Beautiful. You should see my Red Sensation Pear trees that came in as sticks, and with proper treatment, are developing beautifully. And they made it through a severe drought. Now that the rains are here, they should continue to grow, again. The Catawba grapevines, on the other hand, haven't done so well. Now I have to build a compost bin to develop the proper nutrients to feed them to encourage growth. I am a Thinker - and I get the Job done, at an affordable price. What about you? (Compost is organic plant food from kitchen scraps and plant debris.)

You know why everyone rants at you, because your a hypocrite, plain and simple. We design, prototype, repair, and customize our customers products and equipment all the time, but yes there's a humongous but in there, these are regular daily companies were dealing with. This all equals money, they can always depend on us like we can depend on them to keep comming back. What do you have to offer? One part that you say you want done real cheap? You bring up china like they are God's gift to the world and take out your anger on the USA, so that leaves me to beleive you want someone on here "somewhere in north america" to make a prototype so that you can send it over to china to have it mass produced. Because china doesn't want to do your prototype, because there's no money in it. That's another area where your wrong about china working for nothing, from what I've seen chinese want quantity, but I'm positive they'll take you up on the offer if you have something innovative to steal, they've been doing that for plenty of years now. That along with our CEO's and government is why they've gotten so much work and can do what they do for the prices they do it at. I don't like anyone bashing my fellow country men for being crooks as I am one of them your insulting while you burn our flag and raise your commy flag. Business's are barely getting by in this country as it is, no ones getting rich off of you or scamming you, it's the business's that are being screwed. Perhaps there is a bit of misunderstanding here. China and all their Glory is not the issue, nor the problem. It's just that every time minimum wage goes up, the price of all goods and services go up improportionately to the raise that an unskilled person receives. And everybody is effected regardless of what you make as skilled labor. And as the prices of goods and services have climbed sky-high, no other Country on earth wants to buy from us, the US. Even American Industry doesn't want to pay the high labor rates, and that's where cheaper labor Countries come into play. Do you see?

The only way to defeat this thing is to drop minimum wage for unskilled labor to $1 per hour and leave it there forever.

Prices all across the board will drop as salaries for skilled labor sink, too. The advantage in all of this is that the United States will once again become competitive in world markets. The National Debt will drop too as we export more goods than import from other Countries. Make sense?

Now, back to business.

I'm not quite ready to have things machined - though I'm not that far from it. 1st things 1st, I'm developing a product that can be marketed and sold across the Nation. This is simply to develop a decent cash flow so that the Banks will work with me. After that, there will be bigger Projects to tackle. That's when my Company will employ - well let's just say - a lot of skilled workers.

For the moment, I need a link to where I could get a gooseneck for a lamp that clips to a computer.

The lamp is finished and works fine. Took me 2 months to finally learn electronics, and I have other projects on the drawing board. Those may require large amounts of money to produce, even the prototypes.

I did not just fall off the banana boat, you know! I know all about Research & Development, Financing, Stock Ownership, 3D drawings, CAD, CAM, Schematics, Computer Programming, Computer Engineering, Computer Design, and much, much more.

That's just work related stuff to keep me busy! I'm also an Officer of THE LORD, and have orders to rebuild Civilization after God is done reshaping the earth, or the continents on the earth. If you are with me, you may be a Survivor of The Great Deluge. Otherwise, you may just go again. If so, you'll have to relearn everything that you've already learned. Dig?

Somebody needs to catch a goose, whack its neck off, attach a paperclip to it and charge him a couple hundred dollars for his prototype. That would, after all, meet his detailed description of this wonderful new product.

Another thing is China does not comply with the regulations we do and they are paying way less for raw material. On a lot of jobs if the quantities are mid range we can use automation to over come the cheap labor. If you think you are getting highly skilled labor in China for pennies on the dollar you are 100% wrong. I know people that outsource molds and complicated tooling, and they pay 30-50% of USA quotes to get items that need no or minimal rework. The factories that kick out Walmart junk aren't going to do complicated jobs for $2 an hour.

I hardly get into these discussions anymore (here on the Zone or otherwise) because they tend to always take on a personal note. Probably because there is a camp of folks somewhere that seem to think that I am that "over-priced American Labor" and sure, that tends to piss me off. ;)

But I no longer take it personally. I have realized that what we have here is failure to communicate. The problem was clearly stated in post #2. Pick up a pen, draw a couple lines, dimension them (for fun, now call yourself an engineer and don a helmet because you're going to upset all those nice folks as well, lol) and post it up here. If it's not so difficult, what exactly are you waiting for?

That's what I mean by a failure to communicate. You want someone to design this for you or at the very least, do your googling for you. That's fine, you will probably even find people willing to help just for the sake of helping out a fellow. But you're not even in the right zip code to be posting this in the RFQ if an idea is all you have.

It may go without saying, but you managed to mention it twice that you are looking for "cheap"! Here's a google link for you.

Notice the lack of machine shops that use keywords like "cheap"? Now try the same search but use terms like "quality machining". Ahh, there we go. Machine shops want to be found by customers who care about quality. Why would that be? Neither "cheap" nor "quality" really mean anything at all. They are both bull****, relative terms but it must mean something considering the results given.

If you can answer the question above, you will likely find the source of the ire you have drawn here. I don't care one way or the other, I don't have a dog in this hunt. I only read this area for the LOLs.

I take issue with more than a few of your other talking points about minimum wage, $75 an hour workers, and China but that discussion is better suited in another thread. Start a new one in the appropriate section, post a link here, and I will gladly offer my views if you wish.

P.S. For extra credit, do a search on what you are actually looking for; "prototype machining services". Call up just one shop (don't waste everyone's time) and see what their hourly rate is. Consider that a 12 minute phone conversation has cost them one fifth hour of shop rate, and you don't even have a print yet. Then come talk to me about being "over-priced American Labor".

You know, when I think of machining, I think of putting metal on a lathe. What I really need is a manufacturer's phone book where I can look up the parts I need and go from there.

Anyway, I can "machine" my own parts as I have welding skills from studying gold & silver smithing.

If you know of a Parts Manufacturers Directory, let me know.

Never mind. Ya'll have steered me in the right direction! I just Googled the above thing, made a few changes to the search field, and I'm back on track.

Really though, when I need little metal parts made, I'll be in touch.
