Hi. I have just replaced my blown cranial gasket and am ready to try again.
I am trying to figure out how to calculate the 6h tolerance position for a M24 x 1 thread and I cannot get my head around it. I find the wording very confusing and each time I (or the others I work with) try, I get a different answer.
Could someone please explain in simple terms or even better, show me where I can find it on the net?

Smellyfeet - The reason you can not find M24 x 1 6h is because it is not used.
You have a 6H for the nut but not for the bolt. Bolt threads are 4h, 6g and 8g.
I will list 4h and 6g.
M24x1 4h: O.D. max 24.000, min 23.888. Pitch dia max 23.350, min 23.270
Minor dia max 22.773, min 22.654.
M24 x1 6g: O.D. max 23.974m min 23.794. Pitch dia max 23.324, min 23.199
Minor dia max 22.747, min 22.583.

Hello Fella. Its definitely a 6h thread that is specified on our customers dwg. The Machinarys Handbook does go into some detail about calculating a "h" thread at the bottom of the 6g standard tables and lots of reference to 6h on the net but it is not too easy to understand.

Is the customer always right? Ask him/it/her for more specifications.
I often find customers are after pie in the sky when all they needed was a sausage roll.
I am with neilw20. Go back to the customer. Someone on their Eng. staff needs to look up some charts. If they require an "h" limit - it should be 4h.
. If there would be an 6h you could have a very hard time putting a 6H nut onto an 6h shaft since the nut could have 24.000 as its lower limit and the bolt could have 24.000 as the upper limit. Not a real possibility but still theoretical possible. That is why they have a 4h limit available for shafts. This would require grinding the thread. Still could be line to line (theoretical) but a better quality.
