Issues wiring up 12 volt relay to fire a cutmaster 52
I have been working for a week trying to get mach 3 to fire my cutmaster 52. I have tapped into the trigger wires, when I cross them the torch fires, I am using a 12 volt SPDT automotive relay, hooked up to the computer power supply. I am using a G540 and a 4 volt power supply. I am using the computer power supply to power the relay. I have already fried one G540 huge mistake, and I am now on my second new one. Can someone please help me wire the trigger wires to the SPDT 12 volt relay I have. I also have an 48 volt SSR in the picture I tried to use but couldn't get it to fire the torch. I had the 12 volt relay wired up somehow and was able to jumper pin 12 to pin 5 on the G540 and it would fire the torch but I could not get it o work thru Mach 3. Can someone please take a look at this and tell me where to go from here so I don't end up frying another G540. Do I need 5 volts going to pin #1 of the g540 to make the output 1 position 5 work?

You must of meant post 6. I have read it, Im still confused. Sounds like i need to use an input on the g540 instead of an output?? I have a solid state relay in fact i have 3 different relays i have tried and still nothing. All i can do is manually touch the 2 torch wires together and it will fire without mach.

I think i had it wired correctly once, I think it might be a mach 3 issue in the settings.

I had the two torch wires going to the output side of the SSR, and i went from a pos terminal on my power supply to the pos terminal on the input side of the ssr, and neg side of the ssr to the output 1 position 5 on the gecko, the light wouldnt come on on the ssr to show its on unless i jumpered pin 12 ground to pin 5 on the gecko even then the torch still wouldnt fire off.

For starters, I am guessing your torch input requires a contact closure? Do you have the nature of the input? also the SSR you are using requires 48-480vac, which is incompatible with the torch input, You either need contact closure of at the very least, a L.V. DC output type SSR.
The simplest way is to pick up a suitable relay either the output of a BOB or one that is activated by it.
Output 5&6 on the Gecko also operates a relay, see the manual.
Also you can also come directly off the P.P. and use a 2N7000.

Im a novice at this at best but il try to explain best I can, the switch in the torch that Im tapping into does click when pressed so Im sure that its a contact closure. I have another relay comming off ebay thats a spst 4 connections on it. So sounds like the problem is that i cant use the solid state relay. However i have tried the 12 volt relay as well, just the basic automotive type with contacts.

OK, 30amps is a little overkill, to say the least, probably switching a few ma.
You probably could use a SSR but would have to know the input details.

OK lets see if we can get the relay to work.
Connect the 2 wires you have taped to get the unit to fire to the output of the relay ( this would be the contacts/switch side).
Now the coil/control side of the relay connect one pole/contact to ground and take a wire with 12VDC and touch the other contact on the coil, does it fire?
Now that the relay works, we need to find a way to control the relay. I do not think the auto relay can be driven by the computer directly, not enough current, they take like an 1 amp.
I am not familiar with G540 is there an output that will drive the relay? If yes I would put a volt meter on it and see if you can control it with the computer. Once you find the right control to make the output happen when you want it then tie that output to the relay where you were touching with the 12VDC wire. The 12VDC wire was for test only.. DO NOT TOUCH TO THE OUTPUT OF THE G540 . The other side of the relay is still tied to ground. Hope this helps.

Output 1,2 on the g540 are open grounds, i think so when its active it closes the ground to make a connection.

the 48 V relay you ordered - 48V Relay for Router Vac Control on 48V CNC Router System IE Gecko G540 | eBay will enable you to connect the relay coil ( the 2 small terminals)
to the +48V supply (for the G540) and the G540 output

the G540 outputs can only connect the relay coil to ground when swiched on by the printer port pin going high
the output cannot supply a positive voltage to operate a relay as you may expect an output to do !

I stand corrected. As I said I am not familiar with G540. With pull down output putting a meter on the output of the G540 may not show any movement. If it was me I would get a 1000 ohm resistor put 12VDC on one end of the resistor and tie the other end of the resistor to the output of the G540 Now when you put a meter on the output it will read 12VDC when the output goes low( less then a volt) the output is turned on.
Once you find the right control to make the output happen when you want it then tie g540 output to the relay where you had the ground wire and remove the ground wire.. The 12VDC wire will be tied to the other lead of the relay. DO NOT TOUCH TO THE OUTPUT OF THE G540 with a wire that is connected directly to a voltage, it has to have a resistor or coil between the power and the output of the G540.

Ok, thanks for the input, i will definetly try as you suggested with the resistor to find the right output, that should tell me if my software mach 3 ports n pins are configured correctly. I was in my garage for 5 hours after work last night trying diff wire combinations to get it to even work. Once i get home i will try this out and get back to you. I think i have some of those resistors in my tool box if not il head to radio shack.

Im in the process of checking to make sure the output turns on, with the resistor. This is gunna sound rediculous and my lack of electrical knowledge will show. I have the positive probe of my voltmeter on the resistor, with there a 12 volt power wire attached, on one end, and the other end into the output of the g540. Where do i put the negative side of the probe? Also i bought a cheap 12 volt power adapter with a positive and neg wire, what do i do with the neg side of the power adapter, is this where the neg side of my volt meter goes?

I figured it out! I got the solid state relay to activate thru mach 3, however the torch just starts and blows air does not ignite.
