Toroidal Transformer hookup
Hi friend,
could you please help me with something?
I recently bought two NEMA23 12Nm and two drivers DM860H, toroidal transformer 300W and I can't figure out how to connect to my driver that operates in 18-80V AC.
I am afraid of just connecting because I might break it.
I ask for help as to how to connect the toroidal transformer 60V to my driver.
Sorry for my potentially bad English, it is not mu first language.

Usually, stepper drivers run on DC, not AC. If yours really runs on AC current, you won't need the transformer, which puts out DC electricity. But the 18 -80v specification sounds more like DC than AC, which is usually something like 110, 220, or 440v.. I'd contact the drive manufacturer and ask them what it really wants, and where to supply it.

Hi,
you will certainly need a transformer. A toroidal transformer steps down the voltage from 230VAC or whatever your line voltage is to 50VAC.
You can hook that directly to the power input of your drive. The drive has a rectifier built in, so you can supply it with either AC (up to 50VAC) or DC (up to 80VDC).

Surely you have the manual for the drives that show the hook up? see attached.
It states 24VDC to 70VDC (typical 36vdc) You will require a bridge rectifier after the Toroidal. The rectified and smoothed DC is x1.4 the AC .
The advantage with a Toroidal is that it can easily be modified by either removing or adding secondary turns

Hi Al,
I dont know what manual you are looking at but you are not correct.
The DM860H HAS a rectifier built in so you can use AC or DC. According to this pic up to 80VAC or up to 110VDC.

Well various sources of the manual available show 24v to 80v DC, "A regulated (SMPS) or un-regulated supply may be used, preferably UN-Regulated due to its ability to withstand current surges"
A search turned up one
A different Chinese supplier did come up with one version that states the AC DC possible, it is put out by a Chinese outfit called Stepperonline.
All the rest quoted DC only??
