Re: King Rich KRV-2000 Knee Mill CNC Conversion
New project to make a Mill Riser Block out of a piece of hydraulic cylinder 406 O.D. 340 I.D and 216mm long. It was bandsawn from a barrel 3.7m long that weighed 1300kg. This piece alone is around 75kg. A Mill riser block fits on top of the column and raises the turret 200mm to allow more clearance between the spindle and the table for larger jobs like boring a small engine or drilling with a long drill bit or tapping with a tapping head or working over a large rotary table or vise.
They can be purchased for a Bridgeport secondhand for a reasonable price but the King Rich is a bit larger and very expensive. Access to a piece of stock like this made the project viable to build one..

Re: King Rich KRV-2000 Knee Mill CNC Conversion
I needed to register the Riser Block to both the Column and the Turret.

Re: King Rich KRV-2000 Knee Mill CNC Conversion
After sorting out a method of registering the riser block, the turret was lowered back into position and the head was trammed so I could continue machining.

Re: King Rich KRV-2000 Knee Mill CNC Conversion
The tram is good but the surface finish can be improved by changing the tool path exit and including a spring pass.

Re: King Rich KRV-2000 Knee Mill CNC Conversion
When I was happy with the surface finish on the first side, the riser block was flipped over and the rough sawn second side was machined flat.

Installation required the 70kg riser block to be transfered from the table to the column.

The 14 inch long 5/8 UNC hold down bolts had 15/16" AF hex heads. The original 6 inch bolts have 23mm AF heads which match the supplied ring spanners in the Mill Tool Kit.
