How to cut Ali side plates for a new CNC ROuter
After owning a chinese 6040 for a few years, I am contemplating building new, bigger, stronger CNC Router using Extrusion.
I want to use Ali 20mm side plates for the gantry, but how do I cut them, cheaply?
I had a silly idea( Do you think this would work?)......Build the new machine out of Extrusion design the plates in CAD. and use the 6040 to cut out all the plates in MDF.
Asemble and use ththe NEW machine to cut all the final Ali plates? ( Is this as silly as it sounds?...lol)
Anyone done this?
Other options?
I don't think I could cut 20 mm ALi plates on my 6040. This is the whole reason for building a new machine.
Only other option is to design and test fit the plates out of MDF and try to find someone to pay to cut them all out?

Sure you can. You a single flute "O" flute bit, ans make very shallow passes, 0.25-0.5mm deep.

I agree with Gerry...use your 6040, i am using mine for my build. Cutting 25 mm thick plate, not perfect but acceptable:)

Ok....Maybe I sould have said that I didnt think i would live long enough to get it done on the 6040....lol
So the 'MDF' or maybe '19mm ply' thing is a silly idea?

Yes it sure will take a beating doing all that aluminium milling:)

Hi. If you just want to cut the plates you can use a miter saw. Today I used this one for 20mm plates. With much WD40 coolant and multiple slides it works very good, even with the original HM blade the saw comes with.

Thanks Millhouse. I was also concerned about drilling all the holes in the correct places, but I guess that would be an option. thanks again.

It is possible to drill very fast if you use extra short drills (they are accurate even if abused) and a strong 2-speed drill within a solid drill stand like wabeco offers.
PS: Everything (more parts lying around here..) done with a drill stand and a slide miter saw...
The part that took longest was marking all the holes with a height gauge... All the damn holes. :D

Wow...looks good.
Im a way off trying that yet. Got other things I have to do....lol
