Vibration at certain speeds
I have excessive vibration with certain speeds maybe 30-40 ipm. The vibration is loud and causes non-smooth curves - not to mention loud when jogging around. Tools vibrate off spoil board type of vibration. It's mainly on the x and y axis - but z axis has a lot as well. I am using nema 34 ( not CNCRP )
Things I have tried
- all different types of multi-step speeds (2000 - 10000)- does not seem to make a difference. I really thought it would
- added a 1/8" sheet of rubber under the aluminum extrusions - this did help a tiny bit.
- verified everything tightened
- added dampening material to metal pans holding cord guides
Things I have not tried
- loosening the belts???? Currently it is as per the directions - 1/8 in travel with fingers. Should this be looser? Does that help with vibration? Does it make the machine less accurate if you loosen the belts?
Thoughts - what does a person check through when they have issues like this?

Have you checked the amperage output? Maybe acceleration in tuning? I'm not sure because mine is all cncrp.

You mean the amperage from the stepper drivers to the motors? Turn that down? Right now they are at the highest settings - but well within what the motors handle. This is easy to change, I will give it a try.

I have seen what look like vibrations on steppers in other systems when the current is too low. Too high, maybe it causes similar behavior.
I was thinking that acceleration in the tuning screen could cause this as well. When tuning my rotary axis, I tried making it go as fast as possible. Then when it wasn't capable of moving at that speed, I reduced it until it stopped making the sound.
Besides the the steppers, is everything else from cncrp?

Seems to be acceleration independent - only the speed after the acceleration is what determines the vibration. Of course if you accelerate through the vibration zone....there are vibrations.
The only thing from CNCRP is the physical machine. Everything else is a DIY custom build that I just finished. I am using the Centroid Acorn controller as well, so no mach at all.
Everything is working perfectly......just this damn vibration at certain speeds.

If you could post some details on your electronics setup and control software, we can try to offer some assistance or at least advice. Feel free to call us or email us as well and we're happy to discuss with you directly.
I'd suspect something electronics or software related. While mechanical setup issues could potentially cause problems with machine motion, if you followed our assembly instructions, the symptoms you are experiencing are more likely to be related to motors, drivers, or the system generating your step and direction signals.

I am running the following:
- Centroid Acorn Board - with Centroid interface
- Nema34 steppers -
--- Voltage: 3.08V
--- Current: 5.6A
--- Resistance: .55
--- Inductance: 5.5
--- Detent Torque: 12.5 N.cm Max
- 4x60 volt power supplies
- DM860m Leadshine clone Stepper Driver able to handle up to 80 volts
- 2.2 Spindle
- Double shielded wires
The motors are rated at 5.6 amps and I had it set to 5.6amps RMS on the stepper drivers and a peak of 7.8. In retrospect, maybe this was too much. I turned down the amps to 4.0 with a peak of 5.7 and this cut the vibration in 1/3. I wonder if this is the setting I should have used in the first place.
I don't know if this is a fix - maybe I was overpowering my steppers before and it was slamming the steppers around so hard that it caused excessive vibration??? The same vibration is still there - just almost at bearable levels, but I still think it will cause issues with aluminum and Acrylic cuts.
We followed the directions meticulously and verified every step with 2 people. I am still wondering about belt tension.
I am curious how much vibration I should feel in an optimal setup throughout all rpm ranges

What microstep setting are you using?

I'd set it at 1600 or 2000, 3200 max.
What size are these motors (torque)? Are they the really big ones?

Not too big 1232oz
