Which Wood router is best to use as a spindle?
Hi Guys,
Im rebuilding an ELU860 and im getting to the point where i need to choose a spindle.
i want to use a router that i can source either online or locally (canada)
im going to be cutting mostly wood, hardwoods and composites.
does anyone have any experience with routers and if so which one do you think is best.
im looking to spend around $300-350 12amp peak around 2.25hp
here are a couple of my favourite so far:
Porter Cable Product Details for 2-1/4 HP (maximum Motor HP) Multi-Base Router Kit with Router Table Height Adjuster - Model # 895PK
&
DW621 2 HP (maximum motor HP) EVS Plunge Router | DEWALT Tools
any opinions will be greatly appreciated.

A Bosch 1617 might be the best one.

I don't know if it helps..
in Europe I had elu handheld router.. the smaller the 96.. it is a swiss brand..
in usa this is the dewalt..
what you posted the porter cable, that also a good stuff.. practically all of them working great...
on other hand, you might take a look on spindles.. they are close in price but they are not so noisy, no brush to change..
years long you have no maintenance with them..
2 2KW Water Cooled Spindle Motor ER20 Inverter Drive | eBay
best would be you looking for one within its work..
on lower rpms around 12000 you might don't hear it is working..
and their rounout way better than handheld routers
collets are also cheaper .. you can buy virtually any diameter of tool..

@ger21 Thanks for the suggestion. have you used this router yourself??

No, all my routers are Porter Cables. I like the 892, but some people have seen quality control issues.
Re: Which Wood router is best to use as a spindle?
I have been using the Bosch 1617 for more than a year. It was meant to be a short term solution, as I robbed it from my router table when my Dewalt dwp-611 went out. The Bosch has worked really well, the brushes are starting to go but that is expected after running a router for such long durations. Brushes are cheap and easy to replace. Actually, I recommend the Dewalt as well. It has less power and smaller collet but is very quiet, replaced the brushes in that twice. Hoping to get a spindle next. Precise bits have excellent collets for these routers.

Thanks for your advice. ive listened to a few other people and they've all said how good this router is. ive placed my order for a 1617 yesterday. :)

I have a dust shoe drawing for the 1617 and maybe the mount, if you need it.
