3d scanning probe multiaxis

hi guys,

just made a 3d probe using the 3 rods lying on spheres technique.

I have scanned some models with Mach 3 and it's really cool!

for the price it is I beleive a excellent deal and design looks ok.
considering manufacturing cost, I would say that this is not achievable for me.lol

by the way, I didn t indicated but for the jet model, I did 98000 touch and it just seems perfect repeatability so far.


I saw that he also use it as an height probe to set up tools...

I personnaly use a different technique...I have a piece on 10mm aluminium block linked to one wire and the tool connected to the second one...

I was not able to verify centering on mine but as far as I can see it is not moving as the circuit board is fixed to the base of the body...if the probe is secured strait in the tool holder, I shall be also strait...at least in my machine this is the result.

anyway, I have done this probe for myself and as I found it very good, I wanted to share it with others if interested.

Nice job, I found the electrical connection do give error over time du to oxidation of surface. I am in process of building a prob with 4 optical sensors avoid miss connections due to burn or oxidation of contacts.

in the past i've been working a lot on 3D probes.. i have now a new design, that should be easier to build and connect..

I do need to get back to it.. this has been 14 years.. and i've found ways to output the data to a DXF directly..

hy :) is your probe able to get the vectors ... for example, if you probe a sphere of diameter o100, what is the result ?

with a normal probe, you get a round thing, but not quite a sphere :)

With EdingCNC you can store probe points in parameters, and use these to calculate if probed points are on a curve, then you could calculate ahead to see if the next point is on that same curve..

it is also possible to write a routine that follows a contour, i.e. if you probe a contour, you can determine if the contour is either a straight line or a curve, by comparing the previous points.. if it is on a line, store the first point, get the function of said line,and calculate the probable next point, same goes for Curves.. so 3 points in a row, Check if the vectors are identical, if so it is a line, if not it is a curve, this will allow you to probe all around a contour, by determining the angle, and moving accordingly to the expected next point.. store all the point in a DXF file on the fly.

I don't yet have the code for that.. but i know it is possible..
