Pimp my lathe. Converting a HF 44142 3in1 to 3 phase
Decide to upgrade my 3 in 1 again. This time converting from single phase 3/4hp single speed to 3 phase 1hp variable speed via a VFD.
Video of the test run of my dumpster motor + VFD:

Check out these Leeson Motors.

Re: Pimp my lathe. Converting a HF 44142 3in1 to 3 phase
Seems overpriced. Automation direct has similar motors for ~$50 less. More than likely will just try and find another used motor and rebuild it myself again. Save quite a bit that way and my hobby milling will never tax it too hard.

Feeling motivated tonight here is another video.

Got all the remote IO wired up to test switches and ran the controller though it's paces. Also set up the acceleration select input so I can have different ramp down speeds depending if the motor was turned off via the normal control (fwd/off/rev switch) or by one of the EPO switches.
Re: Pimp my lathe. Converting a HF 44142 3in1 to 3 phase
My understanding is that voltage controls rpm and current controls torque.
Re: Pimp my lathe. Converting a HF 44142 3in1 to 3 phase
No. VFD means "variable frequency drive". Frequency controls speed.
VDFs are Awsome, and 3-phase motors can be had on eBay for cheap - even new ones. I've converted my lathe, mill, and even my 4x6 bandsaw. VFDing a cheap bandsaw was a bit silly but I had the parts already, and now the motor stays cool on long cuts, and I can crank up the speed for aluminum.

I understand what a VFD does to some degree. I also have 1 on my lathe. I am responding to his current going down as his rpms increased.

The voltage/frequency curve is flat from 60 to 120Hz in my current setup. Would think for a given speed increase the work needed to spin the motor would go up with speed. (bearing / air drag) If that is correct since my voltage is fixed the current should go up (I*V = P). One thing that it could be is at the increased speed the fans are cavitating and moving less air therefor dropping the total load on the motor....

Some minor progress today got most of the wire strung in the house and the service disconnect output all buttoned up. Just 1 more hole, 1 board, 3 wire staples, and 7 screws till I am done :)

Got another junk motor (out of a snowbank no less) and rebuilt it with acceptable results. Has a slight whine at high speeds I am not crazy about but for $20 worth the risk.

Semi final wiring diagram done and attached. Just placed the order for the parts I was missing. New Lathe motor mount and motor installed now.

Re: Pimp my lathe. Converting a HF 44142 3in1 to 3 phase
Some minor updates to the wiring diagram had to run one main contractor off a switch on the other. If I tried to close both at the same time my transformer would brown out and they would chatter and not close. By running the second off the switch on the first it introduces just enough delay to prevent the chattering and they close first time every time.

project is not only still alive it has been done for a while. Just finally getting around to editing the video.
More to come.
