Largest Scale Model made with CNC Router
Greeting everyone,
I want to share with the community one of our latest project, a scale model made for one of the many mountain zone in Romania.
For this project I used a CNC router machine from Gravograph, with the cutting surface of 800 x 600 mm. The whole model is made of foam, (exept for the table of course) and the trees are made from sponge mixed with paint, and then cut into little pieces (wich took us about a week )
The dimension of the model was 4m x 2,4m and it was dividen in 3 parts, for an easier transportation
Here are some pictures with the digital model. We had some digital topographic support, and we realised the 3d model in a 3d modeling software.

(some pictures with a real life – scale of the model that we presented to our customer)
Because the model was so large we had to divide it in little pieces, that would fit the CNC. So, here is the result:

There were like 20 pieces of “foam puzzle” that put together, one on top of the other would form the lanscape that we needed.
Attachment 242794
The foam blocks were had to be put one on top of the other, because their dimension was limited – only 50mm height

Here are the finished foam blocks, ready to be cut and assembled

After many many hours of cutting and assembeling foam, the scale model stared to look like something more familiar :)

Then, the painting started. We had to pot some color on the foam, to cover the ugly default color

After this, the trees were had to be arranged on the darker zone, glued together, this took about one week, and lot of cigarettes :)

After covering all the cracks in the foam, and the trees were put on the scene, the model had to be taken out by parts.

And… Here are the final pictures and also a video of the model !

The project took about 3 weeks from start to finnish, about 6 people worked on the project, and the final result really satisfied our customer.
I hope you liked the final product as much as we did, and thank you for you attention.

Re: Largest Scale Model made with CNC Router
Wow! When I was in the Army, we setup sand table models of terrain for preplanning actions (I was a recon and forward fire controller). As basic as those tables were, I know how many man hours went into them - and their value to the mission. Using a 3d machine today work sure make things more accurate and in a lot of ways easier - not simpler. Great job.
