New machine - G540 - 110V Huanyang VFD - Chinese spindle 1.5kW

hello everyone,
My name is Marc and am new to the CNC community:wave:. I have been gathering parts to build my first CNC router.

So far all axes move but I am having issues wiring the 110V Huanyang VFD to the G540. It is now powered but the spindle does not spin.

I have tried to program the VFD as explained here: http://www.cnczone.com/forums/diy_cn...gs_manual.html
PD0013 to 8
PD005 to 400
PD004 to 400
PD003 to 400
PD144 to 3000 (but i think i should change it to 24000)
and have set PD008 to 110v

What should I do next?

If i understand I should:
- short DCM and FOR on the VFD to turn the spindle on
- connect G540 pin 7 to ACM on the VFD (top row?)
- connect G540 pin 8 to VI on the VFD
- connect G540 pin 9 to 10V on the VFD (I think it is the pin 10V on the top row)
- program VFD PD001 to 1
- program VFD PD002 to 1

Not sure what I am doing...

I think you have to run the Huanyang from 220v and not 110v. Not 110% sure but it's something to do with when you use 110v single phase in you only get 110v 3-phase out with the HY stuff. For a 1.5kw spindle you require 220v. I think you can add step up transformers to get your 220v.

The front cover you have removed over the terminals usually has a label with the voltage, I don't recall seeing a 110v one?

The VFD was ordered as a 110V unit. the sticker on the front cover shows the voltage input (as show on the previous picture).

HY is the trade mark
01D5 is the inverter capacity 1.5kW
11 is the voltage rating (eg: 43 means 3-phase 380V)
B is the software version

Tips for Newbie Huanyang VFD users

I'm not familiar with huanyang vfds but when I have to made similar settings on my Fuling inverter I had also to set some jumpers into proper position
I see in you vfd's picture you also have some jumpers there. check them, maybe one of them are for enabling/disabling the external commands pin

also (at least for my fulling vfd), when you set the vfd to listen to external commands you should not be able to control it manually
unfortunately it was long time ago and I don't remember more details.

The VFD shows a "LU" or "LV" when powered on. What does it mean?

!st, you need to forget about controlling it remotely for now. Set it up to run off the keypad until you figure it out. Second, check your motor leads, lots of these chinese spindles were wired wrong.

I have 3 versions of the manual and don't see LU/LV in any of them?
If this appeared while trying to commission it, you can set it back to Factory default by PD013 set to 08

yes, I am trying to get the spindle to spin only from the the VFD for now. Still no movement but a LU showing on a VFD when powered. I believe the spindle is porperly wired. 1,2,3,4 from the spindle to U,V,W, ground respectively on the VFD.

Did you set PD013 back to 0, or did it reset itself?
You should be able to leave all at the fact default to try it.
Make sure pd1 & pd2 are 0.

Did you check it WITH A METER? one of those 3 phase legs could be straight to ground, others posts have indicated this problem.

PD200=65535
PD209=100

I have been trying to control my Huanyang VFD to Mach3 via Gecko 540. But running into a few issues:

1) (FIXED, it was just a bad connection) I still have to hit the RUN button to get the spindle to spin. I still cannot get Mach 3 to be "the source of Run commands". I have a 48V 30A SPST relay in between pin 5 on G540 and DCM/FOR on the VFD. I tried to set PD001 to 1 and still couldn't get it to start even when directly wire DCM to FOR. The relay does switch when typing M3 or M5 commands.

2) The VFD speed is not consistent with Mach 3. It spins at 23160rpm when entering M3 S24000 and 7200rpm when entering M3 S6000.

3) I am looking to change PD142 to 13.6A since the VFD is 110V but it maxes out at 7A.

My VFD parameters for my 1.5KW 110V water cooled chinese spindle

PD070 set control to 0-5V: 0
PD0072 is now set at 400 instead of 50
PD141 rated motor voltage: 110V

The settings you show are wrong if you are using Mach outputs, (not Modbus).
PD01 is 1 external communication
PD02 is 1 Pot or analogue control
PD07 should be 135Hz if using the 400Hz Chinese spindle.
PD143 is 02
PD144 is 3000
BTW there is a Modbus Plug in available also.
PS: I see that others have used PD10 = 8.

PD001 doesn't let me turn star/run the spindle (even if i manually connect DCM and FOR, the relay does switch tho).
PD007 is the min. frequency. It is set at 0.50Hz and the value can range from 0.01 and 20.00 HZ
PD143 is 02
I also thought that PD144 should have been set at 24000 but it maxes out at 9999.

I rechecked, The setting for min freq is PD11 not PD7, and should be set for around 130Hz otherwise you can burn your motor out if using the 400Hz model.
PD144 is set for the rpm at the supply freq 50/60Hz for the pole count of the motor (2pole).
PD144 = 3000
If you are set for external commands PD1=1 and also PD2 = 1 and a pot attached then it should run with the FWD closed?

I changed PD011 to 130Hz. The spindle now spins at 7800rpm when I enter M5 in Mach 3, and 22800rpm when entering M3 S24000.
I still cannot set PD001 at 1. The spindle does not run when connecting DCM and FOR.

I can now run the VFD from Mach 3 (the issue was a bad wire connection). The VFD speed is not consistent with Mach 3. It spins at 23160rpm when entering M3 S24000 and 7200rpm when entering M3 S6000.
The highest rated motor current that can be set is 7A in PD142 when it needs 13.6 A at 110V (1.5kW)

I followed your post regarding the issues you have had but before I connect my spindle up what were your final settings at including ports pins etc if you dont mind sharing them that is.
Also the wiring diagram from the gecko g540 to the spindle
