I have a Spare SL3 with Good Servo's, Spindle Unit, etc... The machine is in good condition, but the axis drives give me fits.... Are there any Good Option out there to use the Original DC Servo's with a Different, or shall I say more modern Axis Drive? Thanks.
Could be, but SL3s were made for years, so could be anything from a yasnac 2000 to a Fanuc 10/11 ;)
If early, then almost any 90vdc drive can handle the servos. Most I've seen also replace the spindle drive and spindle motor though, as those were a different animal.

Depending, you will need some hw to link the original servos to the new controller hw and firmware.
If the servos are/were 0-10V analogue, then You need an interface able to accept those signals.
Mesa HW for EMC2 linux is very good, and respected.
EMC2 has some quirks.
So does everything else.
Machx needs a hw controller, and the best is the Cslabs series csmio-xx.

I use the CSMIO-IP-S, ie step/dir, but the -A for analogue is equally good and can link directly to analogue-driven industrial servos.
The CSMIO-IP-S + Machx is the best combo I know of,
as a professional MT builder.
My lathe servos support both step/dir and analogue, I use s/d.
The emc/mach/centroid ((gsk)) lathe stuff all have various quirks, drawbacks, failures, missing features, etc.
And machx stuff depends on the hw interface, a lot.
(So does emc2, but less visibly).
I would replace the DC servos with a more modern system. The servos from DMM Technologies https://store.dmm-tech.com/ are inexpensive and work very well. I use their 1.8KW servos for the axis drives on my lathe. Once these are installed your options for a control system are almost limitless. The DMM servo drives will accept either analog or step & direction control.
Somebody local retrofitted an SL3 with a smooth stepper board and Mach3.
The turret worked, and I believe it might have had rigid atpping.
he did say he had fits getting the original servo drives to work, and switched to used AB servos and drives he got of of ebay.
Look at the GSK and LNC offerings of all in one controllers. The y both have some interesting offerings.
Sinumerik 828D with the S120 Sinamics drive package (nano-bit resolution). Contact an official Siemens rep/var for price, you'll be surprised how affordable it is. They also have a 808D Retrofit package for half the price almost. Comes with the Ctrl+Drives+Servos+Plc+Cabling+Solid warranty/service. Bullet-proof stuff...
