Lathe VFD conversion
Hello,
I want to convert a Prazi SD400 (8x14) lathe to variable speed, without a loss of torque at slower speeds. The current motor is 1/2 hp. What would be the best VFD/ 3ph motor combination to accomplish this task. Thank you for your replies.

Did you change the motor already? The stock SD400 has a 1/3 horse motor.
Take a look here for a Hitachi drive.

When you look for a motor, make sure to specify that it will be running on a VFD. Not all motors do well on VFD's :)

Steve,
Thanks for the reply. I was planning on getting a larger inverter duty motor (1HP) to maintain enough torque at slower speeds. Trying to figure out if a larger motor will fit on the machine properly. Maybe this is not necessary with a sensorless vector drive.

Wow i am glad i looked at this post...i had no idea i could get a vfd with a 120v input that produces 3 phase at three hoursepower!
