Retrofit alternatives for Fanuc 0-M mill.
Hi!
I have a mill (from 1991) with fanuc 0-m control and red cap servos.
I'm playing with the idea of installing some newer control hardware and software. Really like the Centroid system.
I understand the red cap servos has a difficult encoder signal, but I've found some "adapter" boards (pico systems http://pico-systems.com/osc2.5/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=16&osCsid=fkvucevi7oj dcvn1v7gali16e6) that can translate it into a more universal hall system.
But for the voltage, what kind of power supply will be needed for drivers and brakes?
Anyone done something similar?

The motors are most likely 200V (240V) thus the drives would need to be rated the same. The brakes are most likely 24VDC, most likely only on the Z axis.
The simple way to do this is to just replace the motors and drives with off-the-shelf units from DMM Tech or Delta. This is what I did after looking at all the options, least amount of hassle and it just works.

Does dmm or delta have something bolt on?

The DMM and Delta motors are standard sizes as are the Fanuc, so most likely they will be a bolt on in whatever power range you need. On my lathe, I had to build an adapter for the Z axis, but the other 3 were direct bolt on when I replaced the Fanuc motors. I used DMM motors and am very happy with them.

If I'm going down that route, only the ATC will be the biggest challenge then.

The ATC motor is most likely a standard frame size also.
