A friend of mine and myself are looking into getting a CNC Acrylic engraving/cutting machine. Both of us are new to this so any input on machines that would be a good buy or any advise would be greatly appreciated. Nothing to big and prefer to stay under $1000 if possible but at the same time we want a good machine we can rely on.

The laser cuts with a strong beam of light. The router cuts with a spinning tool.

Honestly we are open to anything. I take it laser is better?
Lasers make cuts in acrylic with nicer edge quality than a router does. But a router is more versatile, especially if you get beyond cutting-out work. You can do 3D cutting with a router, which isn't really possible with a laser.
I don't think you'll find a very good router or laser in the price range you've set; though. There are machines that cheap, mostly from China, that will claim the ability to do all sorts of things. But a good machine you can rely on will cost more.
