Figuring out Stepper Wiring

Hi,

I have some surplus steppers that are 6 wire. What is the easiest way to suss out the wiring?

If I randomly hook 3v up to the wires can I fry anything? What am I looking for when I do this? Does a stepper respond to hi/lo transitions or is constant voltage ok?

I found this good tutorial about stepper motor, it will certainly answer all of your question. It have a section on how to find the correct wiring sequence.
