Angle Iron Load capacity...

I'm working on moving a compact washer dryer upstairs and want to support my dryer with some angle iron but can't find a chart with some type of load capacity, my math is not good I confess...

I want to use .250 hot rolled angle iron 3" x 3" x 24" attached to my walls to support a dryer weighing in under 100 lbs. I don't think this will be an issue but would love some confirmation on the idea... angle iron is the best fit due to some space limitations.

I've sketched up a drawing to help visualize my problem.

Any help would be appreciated.

24 inches of 3x3x0.250 angle would support a car. No problem for a 100 lb dryer.

Appreciate the response... I kind of figured the weight wouldn't be a problem.

Hi Adam - The steel angle is not a problem just don't hold it on with chewing gum. So use adequate screws/bolts etc Peter

Plan is to bolt it to the studs... could I also flip the angle with similar results?

Out of curiosity, what is the appx. weight max that angle can hold across the entire piece when bolted against a wall similar to this?

A lot. Here is an example of a 5000 lb mill sitting on 4x4x3/8 angle. Those angles are bolted on with three 3/8 bolts each. I did not do this, but it seems to work fine. I've rolled it all over my shop.

Bolted to the wall as you show would support several hundred lbs safely. I think the studs would be the weak point.

OK, then I'm good with the Angle...

Last question on the subject is 1/4" over kill??? should I be looking more in the neighborhood of 3/16" or 1/8"??

I think 1/8 would support a dryer just fine. My full sized dryer weighs about 50 or so lbs. I think your biggest problem is going to be finding enough studs to screw into, just depends on how the walls were constructed.

That's one light full size Dryer...

No worries with me mounting the Angle upside down either, correct? It doesn't impact the structural integrity of the iron by doing that?

Either way will work. In either case you want the screws near the top.

1/8" would be more than enough for support the load. I think you could even get by with something as thin as 16 GA. This is also going to be dependent on where the dryer is positioned on the angle iron. The further away from the wall the thicker the material needs to be.
