USB mini female to mini female cable
I'm trying to make a 'usb mini female to usb mini female' interfacing cable for a project I am working on. It has to go between a Arduino Nano and a mini usb bulkhead.
The bulkhead part has usb mini male on both sides. I thought one was female....doh.
I first soldered all 5 pins straight through and had both connectors the same...didn't work. Then I thought maybe pin 4 was not supposed to be connected, so I unsoldered it on one end...didn't work.
Then I thought I got the wrong 'pin 4' ( got male and female pinouts mixed up) so I re-soldered the first wire back on and disconnected the new 'pin 4'...didn't work.
Have Googled to see if I can find a wiring diagram but cannot find exactly my situation.
Anybody know what I'm doing wrong?
I didn't think I would have to swap D+ and D- wires at one end, but is that my mistake?
I don't want to keep on desoldering and soldering wires until i get it right, as the connectors are very small and the heat will eventually damage them ( although I have a very small tip, and Mag lamp...)so they will not be fit for use.

Re: USB mini female to mini female cable
For this to work, the TX of the Arduino has to be connected to the RX of the bulkhead (assuming the bulkhead is a device). The RX of the arduino goes to the TX of the bulkhead.
GND to GND and +5V to +5V. You only need these 4 wires.
It is the same as if you would connect the arduino to a USB to Serial adapter or any other serial device.

Re: USB mini female to mini female cable
Hi hfjbusis, Thanks for the conment.
I don't think the bulkhead is a 'device'....it is just a way of interfacing usb through an enclosure.
I dentified power and ground on my lead and swapped Tx and Rx to see what would happen and it still doesn't work.
The Arduino has the power led lit so I assume polarity is correct.
If 2 wires are correct, there are only 2 possible options and 1 must work , right....lol....no....
I must be missing something...

Re: USB mini female to mini female cable
USB doesn't have TX and RX; it has D+ and D- lines. It's a differential bi-directional data link.

Re: USB mini female to mini female cable
Yes, I know...I thought it was a 'terminology' thing.
Re: USB mini female to mini female cable
Sorted it out. I am used to using 'male' and female' for IDing conectors. The standard is "Receptacle' and 'plug'
I had disconnected the wrong 'pin 4'.......

Great that its working and that you have figured it out yourself.

@Sterob
I use these kind of cables for my enclosures. The thick female end is pressed/clamped into a square hole in the enclosure
