Not fast enough! 80ipm reliable rapid moves which was a little disappointing. Got some resonance which isn't helping things.
Only have 3000rpm max spindle so limited to around 20-24ipm cutting with a 8mm 3 flute anyway (esp slotting).
If it makes any money it'll be spindle and servo upgrades first.

High acceleration is the important for 3D work. If your machine velocity is fast, but can accelerate the axes up slowly then it will be still slow with 3D work because it can't accelerate up and down in time to reach the programmed feedrates.

This is where I'm glad I went overboard for Nema34's on my PM25 clone.
At 400rpm (2000mm/min) the torque figure is almost identical to the Nema23 motor from a similar model line.
When it comes to acceleration though it's a fairly big difference so far.
Haven't got round to do that much testing yet with tuning to find it's stall point.

My home shop CNC can cut composites pretty damn fast, its almost scary. I could have a nap between each passes when it cuts ferrous-anything though...

Should have asked what sort of 'rapids' (aka non-cutting moves) are you getting from your homemade cnc instead ;)

I converted a colchester clausing mastiff, I had to slow it down, 600 ipm rapids on the x axis is too fast. I limit it to 100 ipm usually to give me half a chance to hit the estop. most of the time that's still too fast for me. I make large parts (3" to 10") and rapids don't save much cycle time.

A little update.
Dumped the X,Y nema34 1080oz motors.
Swapped for nema23 566oz. Kept it as a 60Vdc system.
Rapids up to 2500mm/min (98ipm), very smooth and it could easily do more.
Acceleration went up to a setting of 3000 without issue. Seems limitless atm.
Still not the fastest cutter with it's 3000rpm spindle limit. Should be much better when the servo goes on.

I have a belt driven X hub that can cut at 800IPM yet it's really futile at that speed on the grounds that my Y hub max cutting rate is 90IPM. Except if I cut a lot of even notches I never see anyplace close to 800. I leave it set ~120IPM.

Just measured mine, hitting 6000mm/min X & Y 3000mm/min Z
Not crazy fast, but only has a 200x200 work area.
Oh, and cuts steel like butter.

Got the same speeds on my 200x200 machine. Unfortunately, the only thing it can cut like butter is, well, butter.
