cnc workshop/emc fest.
We got down here to Galesburg, Illinois thursday night and stopped into the workshop to drop of a few things. Yesterday we got out bright and early and started wondering around. Lots of neat machines and 'stuff' for sale.
when the emc group got there (they work late and sleep late) I got to watch the mazak do rigid tapping for the first time... Well emc doing rigid taping for the first time. :) Very very cool

Also during the begining of the week they worked on the lathe adding css and fpr.

here is a video of emc2 rigid tapping in plastic. They also tapped about 72 holes in aluminum.

Man, I'm envious. Hope the show was a good time. Then again, how could it be be anything else? Meeting the emc folks who are now just names in my mailbox would be awesome.
Maybe in a year or 2. This cnc project is chewing up disposable income at a frightening rate.

here is rigid tapping with a few tool changes.. They where playing with tool offsets. John K (one of the developers) wanted to set up the 3 tools in the tool table for ease of use. There is very limited tooling for the mazak so they used a 3/16 ball end mill to helically cut the tap hole. Then they camfered it with a ball end mill. then tapped it. This is all done with emc2. The slowness of the tool change is caused by having to align the spindle using an encoder on the spindle and the spindle motor. WIth the gear lash - it take a bit for the pid loop to align it. other time it is very quick.

Any chance you have some pictures of the Workshop in progress? When I got there things had slowed down quite a bit.
