The Flute Length, or functional length, determines how deep a hole can be drilled.
The Overall Length (OAL) is the length of the entire bit. (Shank + flute)
The Shank is the end of a drill bit grasped by the chuck of a drill machine. Round shanks center more reliably than hex, but hex shanks are less likely to slip and are better for drilling hard materials.
The Drill Diameter refers to the diameter of the cut, and determines the drill hole size.
The point angle or the angle formed at the tip of the bit is determined by the material the bit will be operating in. Harder materials require a larger point angle, and softer materials require a sharper angle. The correct point angle for the hardness of the material influences wandering, chatter, hole shape, and wear rate.

Carbide tipped tools are more efficient and cost-effective compared to high-speed tools because they retain their cutting edge hardness at high machining temperatures which are generated by high cutting speeds. Carbide has a high melting point at 2,870°C(5,200°F).
Tungsten carbide drill bits are also known for its hardness. Tungsten falls between 8.5 and 9 on Moh’s hardness scale (While diamonds have a hardness of 10).
Carbide is a solid material for use in drilling due to its hardness factor, as a result of this, carbide provides a longer-lasting, stable work life.
