Spindle drive fault
I have a mid 80's Hurco BMC-30, with a Fanuc Drive. I have an error: Spindle Drive Fault Check Drive System. When this happens there is an AL 02 code on the drive. I have a real nice Hurco repairman who knows that I can do most of these repairs myself I am just not very good at diagnosing the problem yet. He hooked me up with a guy from a place called Precision Zone inc, in Wheeling, IL. who said my drive was bad. I ordered one from him and replaced it. That was not the issue, it does the same thing. He mentioned something about the encoder being bad and he took the drive back. My questions are: Does anyone know where the encoder might be located I can't find it listed anywhere in the manual and maybe a good place to get one? If it is located in the motor itself should I just replace the whole motor? Any help will be great.
Thanks,
John

OK, this morning I start it up and after calibration I can manually turn the spindle off and on without issue, which usually isn't the case, it usually errors out then also, but as soon as I run a program it does a tool change the head comes down and errors whenever the spindle is supposed to start. The error I get most is the Spindle drive fault Check Drive System, occasionally I get Agree System Failure.

Sounds like a faulty orient card. Will it orient in manual mode?

Yes I can orient/lock the spindle. I c an actually turn it on in manual (most of the time), just when I go to auto it errors out.
Thank you for the reply,
John

OK, today I finally got some time to mess with it a bit. I traced the cables from the drive to the motor and found no cracks or anything. I wiggled them around and just repositioned them a bit, and it has been running just fine all day. I don't know if it is just deciding to run for a bit after having a couple months off or not, but this is the first time I have been able to get more than one cycle out of it in 2 months.
I guess now I need to maybe replace the cables. Does anyone know where I can find these, preferrably new ones?

That's a Yaskawa drive. Have you the list of error codes? If not, I can tell you.
-
Yes it is and no I do not have them.
Thanks

It's an internal magnetic contactor failure. Look for the contactor (usually marked as an HV-75. A black block with terminals about 6"x4"x4") and see if it has any wiring issues. Also open the front cover of the drive and check the two fuses in the bottom (open the hinged panel to get to them) 1 1/4" glass fuses 4A). Check also that the spindle motor fan is running normally as the contactor and the fan are supplied by the two fuses).

Thank you.
I will let you know.
