G96 repeat without S word

This may seem like a dumb situation, but I cannot find the information I am looking for and don't have the ability to experiment.
If I use G96 S220 for a facing operation, change out tools for a different operation but want to use the same SFM, can I write G96 without the S word?

What SFM would the G96 use? Would it take the S word used for G97 or the previous G96 word?
