I was looking for some insight from someone who has taken screws out of a stepper motor.
DY states pretty clearly how they would proceed.
I guess I might be a little gun shy about removing screws from a stepper motor, although it may be apples and oranges, I've had a few bad experiences trying to repair induction motors.

The only thing I can think to suggest is that if the screws DO strip out (either the motor screws or the cover screws) then you could just remove both and find a length of threaded rod of a diameter less than the screws and run it all the way from one end to the other. Then add locking nuts on either end. I've done that to mount a motor when I didn't have easy access to the motor side of the mounting plate, but the back of the motor was far enough out that I could get to it.
