Alright, i'm new to solidworks and i'm trying to create an assembly where
a ball is placed into a tapered hole.
I've tried just about every mating option without luck. What would be the
best option to mate the tapered hole with the ball??

when you say centers, you mean origins?? correct?
I tried making the origins of both concentric to each other. it didn't like that.
it will let me make a surface on the shaft concentric to the origin of the ball.
then, i click on the tapered surface, then hit coincident, then click on
the surface of the ball. i get "selected entity is not valid for current mate type".

I think that if the tapered face was made with a drafted cut, there isn't a way to do what you are asking.
If the tapered face was made with a revolved sketch (either base/boss or cut), there is a workaround.
1.) Draw a construction circle where:
a.) the center of the circle lies on the line that is the rotational axis
b.) the circle is tangent to the tapered face
and
c.) the diameter is the same as your ball diameter.

2.) In the assembly, show the revolved sketch and mate the surface of the ball concentric with the center of the construction circle.

If the center of the ball is also the origin of that part, it would also work to mate the origin of the ball coincident with the center of the construction circle. Either way, the ball will still rotate in the assembly (if that is important to your project).
