Single Board computer for LinuxCNC
Anyone successfully using LinuxCNC on a single-board computer?
Looking to run LinuxCNC with a Mesa card (probably a 7i92) For packaging reasons, i need a single-board computer (not enough cabinet space for a full-size PC)
Looking for names/models of single-board computers that others have used successfully
Thanks!
Mike
Re: Single Board computer for LinuxCNC
The Gigabyte Brix GB-BXBT1900 is known to work well for this.
(you need to turn off speed switching in the BIOS and disable power
management states > C1 to get decent latency and address some video issues)
Probably many other MiniPCs would work (especial faster ones)
but they need to be tested
Re: Single Board computer for LinuxCNC
ECS BAT-I/J1800 micro ATX motherboard with a Mesa 6i25+7i76 inside my control cabinet. No problems so far.

Hello Mike
I am running PathPilot on a AMD GizmoSphere 1. I have also demonstrated MACH 3 and LinuxCNC.
I converted a Denford NovaTurn to AC servos;
https://www.cnczone.com/forums/bench...754-cnc-3.html
NovaTurn Servo retrofit AMD Gizmosphere iBOB2 PCIe x1 - Denford Software & Machines
Config;
AMD GizmoSphere I
IBOB 2
MESA 6i25
MESA 7i77
Yaskawa SGDA-01AS 100W servos
Control is +- 10V Torque mode.
The only problem, AMD no longer makes these. There may be a few still out there?

Re: Single Board computer for LinuxCNC
Ok, if the gizmosphere 1 works fine, hopefully the gizmosphere 2 works as well. That's what I found available, and ordered.
I'm sure I'll be back with lots of questions......
Thanks!

Hello Mike
The Gizmo II is a little faster but it does not have a SATA port like the Gizmo I. This was a dumb idea.
There is a unpopulated SATA connector on Gizmo II. I have not added one to my board yet.
I have used my iBOB 2 for the SATA connector, Unfortunately the schematics for the Gizmo I and II are different.
The pinouts on the high speed ports for the PCIe interface were reversed. Therefore, all functions on the IBOB 2 work with the Gizmo I.
The iBOB 2 will only provide a SATA interface, but the PCIe will not function because the signals were switched. My Gizmo IIs are pre-production units that were provided by AMD.
I already have PathPilot 2 running on the Gizmo II with a Mesa 6i25 attached, I just have not connected any servos yet. Everything fits in a case about the size of a small cigar box.

NOTE;
I am also working on a different solution using a different processor, ie not AMD or Intel.

Re: Single Board computer for LinuxCNC
It does have an mSATA port, for plugging in a SSD. But, hopefully the micro-SD alone is adequate.
I just got it, and was surprised by the lack of a VGA port. Going to have to get an adapter to use the older monitor I was planning using, for hdmi to vga
Re: Single Board computer for LinuxCNC
SSD is better in read/write, speed and storage method than SD card ....And, seem someone can run well Mesa 7i96 on Raspberry PI 4?, I really want to use this SBC instead?!
Re: Single Board computer for LinuxCNC
Have you looked into the Beaglebone black sbc it's small runs linuxCNC and uses onboard PRU - programmable realtime units. Should be lots of info on how to wire this up. The one I have came with a DB-25 connector and LinuxCNC preloaded

Hello wyzarddoc
I have not looked at the Beaglebone SBC. If it only had a PCIE interface. I have not looked into this SBC, there may be a way to create a PCIE from its IO?

Re: Single Board computer for LinuxCNC
There are a few people using the Raspberry PI4. Combine it with a Mesa 7i96 or 7i76e but I think Mesa are working on a board that connect to the GPIO. But I use the Brix J1900 Peter (PCW) mentioned with a Mesa 7i76e ethernet board which I purchased before the 7i96 was released..

And also the Odroid H2+ is a cool PC with a bit more grunt then the Gigabyte BRix mentioned earlier

I ran one up with Linuxcnc but I moved it to another project with a 15" touch screen on a press brake.
