NOT A NEWB BUT THIS IS A NEWB QUESTION

I know a good bit about mastercam 9
but my first attempt at chamfering failed, and even combing through all the books ive got the only part they showed on chamfering left me clueless

i make a contour, select 2d chamfer
leave the depth at 0 select the chamfer box
here it says the chamfer will be determinded by the distance in x and a tip offset, so how do i calculate for the chamfer i want?


i used the 1/2 x 45 tool they have made it .25 over in x and left the tip offset at .1 as the book suggested but it alarmed on me

Chamfering is simple in Mcam.

So your tool is a 1/2" cutter diameter, 90 degree with a point I assume....

I don't know what you mean by "made it 1/4" over in X"

What size chamfer do you want?

If you are trying to chamfer 1/4" with a 1/2" tool and you have a tip offset of .1" you will need a tool that is bigger than 1/2"

A 1/2 Inch 90 degree chamfer tool will only JUST chamfer 1/4" with NO tip offset as it only has 1/4" worth of cut depth(flute length)

Mastercam will create the depth that the tool needs to go based on the width of chamfer and tip offset but it also knows if the tool won't be able to handle what you tell it to do...which is what is going on I believe. I assume it said "tool too small" etc...or something like that?

Yep your tool is to small. the radius of a 1/2" chamfer mill is .25" use a larger tool and it should work. Or just try making your chamfer smaller in the menu

i get what your saying about the size of the tool now,

so lets say i wanted a 1/8 or a 3/16 chamfer or watever
how would i do that, i dont understand how to calculate it

i know how to do it buy hand but i want to knwo how to do it with this for
shapes that are irregular

So how your set-up in the pic will make a .1" chamfer and it will offset it so your tip of your tool is .1" below the lowest point of the chamfer. Keep in mind your tool needs to have the correct dimensions. does your tool have a flat on the end of it or pointed. This will throw out mastercams calculation too

so what if the tool has a tip, most do

If your tool has a flat tip you will have to know the diameter of it and put that value in the tool parameters for that tool
