Homemade fixed gantry build
New guy to the forum and first cnc machine build . Just starting frame work . Should be 24x36 with 12" Z travels . Should have welding done soon so it can go for heat treatment
.750 steel ribs and plate for gantry mount
3x5 .375 wall rails
Gantry tubing is 6x10 .5 wall tubing
Have 2505 ball screws with double nuts for all axis
25mm linear rails for all axis
DMM 750w ac servos and drives all here .
Purchased the controller form CNC4PC , its on the way . Using a UC300ETH board all set up to go in an enclosure form Arturo .
Have not totally decided on a spindle but eyeing a 5.5KW BT30 atc spindle
More to come as progress is made .

Looks really good! Did you design it?

Re: Homemade fixed gantry build
No the idea came from lukaszbioly3 on cnc.info.pl . I looked around for a long time and liked how it looked . Never spoke to him , just looked at pictures and scaled it to what i though was OK . Everything is a new learning process for me . I had to learn some cad to draw the parts to lazer cut . I have a ton to learn how to run it too . I had a good friend that passed who made parts for me over the years . Always wanted something to do my own so here we go . The picture attached is not mine . Its where my inspiration came from .

Re: Homemade fixed gantry build
What type of materials are you planning to cut with this beast ?
If the rest of the machine is as heavy duty as that base it could cut most anything.
Re: Homemade fixed gantry build
Hoping its good on aluminum mainly . Maybe a little steel . One of my daughters may do a few wooden signs . Just hobby type stuff ... shop therapy :)
Re: Homemade fixed gantry build
Nice looking design! I would highly recommend you design in way covers now before going any further. Do not overlook this need or you will regret it like I did! are you thinking of having a ATC carousel?

Re: Homemade fixed gantry build
atc will come sometime . Carousel would be cool , even a rack moving with table could get by . That is why looking at bt30 spindles . I have been looking at those bellow type way covers with the stainless top . Pic is style I am thinking .

Had to see what gantry was going to look like before welding . Looking bigger than I though but its cool . Both ends and top gets capped with .5 plate .

Re: Homemade fixed gantry build
Pretty sure tracking said tomorrow for the controller from CNC4PC . Still lots to do . Want to get welding done so it can get stress relieved . Couple things I learned , cutting this tubing with skilsaw with carbide metal blade actually worked quite good . The blade was a Diablo steel demon . That was till tube sprung and wedges it . Next time if I did it again I would shop and look at quality of the tubing first . The uprights where of one length and not very flat . The other is luckier , its pretty square and flat . 50lb per foot tube seems heavier when your older :)
Re: Homemade fixed gantry build
the servo's from DMM are nice and not so bad on price. only down side is all the extra hardware for noise they suggest you add to the system. adds up fast to make for an expensive servo controller. but any servo controller would need this so it's just part of the expense for the higher end stuff.
Re: Homemade fixed gantry build
The servos are reasonable . DMM had these on ebay as demos , motors could have been drives and cables are new . 1197.00 shipped made me happy for all .
Re: Homemade fixed gantry build
i bought 4 of the drives and 4, 750 watt motors for another project i have started. i think my bill was around 2,200 but i got a lot of extra stuff from them on that order. the EMI filters and line reactors sized to the motor size you use can add up fast. automation direct is a good source for a lot of the stuff you need but it never hurts to shop around to save some money.

This is the spindle that caught my interest . 5.5KW BT30 . He is out of stock for a month but lots to do before that .
