Hi There fellow Australian's!
Well i thought i should finally put a post on here and introduce myself, as i have been visiting the zone for many months. I Live in Modbury South Australia, I have been building a Joe's cnc for some months now and am just about completed. I have been using it to make small projects along with my other hobbies, DIY. Arcade machines etc. I will at this point like to say thankyou to cnczone and everyone that uses the forums because without you, i would not have been able to build the cnc...
Checkout http://www.ourmilkyway.net/CnC%20Machine.html there are a couple of pics of my build...
I decided some months ago to buy a $50 cheap plunge router and get to work cutting out the parts required by hand..
Now i have the experience of building a joe's by hand from scratch if anyone else has any questions, or needs help to do the same just let me know, its now time for me to give something back to the forum....
It might not be the prettyest looking machine but hey! it works....
thanks again all...
Oswaldo!

Yes this sounds like a good idea
My Name is Peter
I am a trade machinist working in the industry and been working in Sydney - Newcastle area over the last 15 years machine railway wheels and castings, large mining castings and jobshop in the plastics industry
Been using cnc mills, traveling columns, vertical bores fitted with Varies Fanuc controllers, allen bradly, semeins controllers.
Also have used Alpha cam, smart cam, and currently been trained in proe 4 manufacturing cam package.
As for hobbies, I muck around with motorcycles with a couple of long term restoration project and have a shed full of machine tools at home.
I live in Banksia Park SA only a Magpie flight from where you are. I have a couple of CNC mcs in my engineering business but have always been interested in these simple builds with great fascination and the idea of building one myself. I have a defunct LaserKomb mc bought at auction which has most of the stuff needed already there, just needs a new control I guess and would love to set it up on my own with new servos etc some day... some time... some how? I am intrigued as to what sort of cuts you can take in various materials and what sort of speed and accuracy and surface finish etc
CNC is amazing for doing very intricate shapes, and many copies of an exact same thing, to any scale and at any angle, all things that are very difficult on a manual machine, and for a home hobbyist to be able to make a simple mc to do this in his home workshop must be very rewarding.
thought it better to start a new thread for my cnc build,
so if anyone has any questions etc pop over to here:

Hi Neighbour :)
Hi, Graeme here. New to the community. I am halfway through a "Hairy Forbes" HM-45 conversion.
Is there anyone else in Melbourne Victoria
Hi Guys ,
I'm santosh from India , I'm keen on interacting with guys using DIA/ CBN toolings . I'm personally keen to learn as well keen to share my experience .
Looking forward to hear
Cheers
Santosh
Hi Guys
I joined last year but have been away for a while. I am also in Melbourne and my field is toolmaking and cadcam. Happy to help in these areas if I can. Hats off to those of you that have built your own machines. I am interested in that sort of stuff and hope to learn a lot here.
Cheers
Hello,
I am in northern qld (Cairns) and would like to say hi,
and thanks for all the info's :)
Hi Psytron, good to see somebody within driving distance :)
I live in Babinda, gimme a yell if I can help with anything, I noticed your post re. PCB milling, I could have possibly direct printed them for you but I kinda broke my printer, I am going to hook it all up again once my shed has power, I will let you know if the news is good !
Cheers.
Russell.
Russell?
How much rain have you had? Did that kill the power?:drowning:
Hi Russel,
good to hear there are some people within reach :) have you made yourself any of cnc equipment??? I am looking at doing a small cnc engraver/router for my first project. As for the pcbs are you talking about the press and peel method or similar??
Hi Guys
I too am in North Queensland, Townsville to be exact.
Built my first machine last year, CNC Router. Will cut 500X500mm.
Have cut out a couple of violin back and tops and necks. As well as a couple of signs for the inlaws ;-).
Problem is router noise in the suburbs, any ideas on spindles?
Hi Babb,
To my knowledge most of the noise is generated by the high speed motor in your router. So spin slower or use a slower motor to drive a slave spindle using a belt using different sized pullies will get you the speed u need. Be careful tho you dont want it coming apart at high speed ( i think this is how to do it :) ).
Where did you get your motors / controllers from?? local or overseas?? Looking for a heads up on some localish supplies :)
Hi Neil, yeah we got a bit of rain, but it is nothing for us to get over 250mm of rain in a 12 hour period, the people in Ingham and the Gulf suffered a bit more than us.
I guess the easiest is to link my router and printer build :

http://www.cnczone.com/forums/showthread.php?t=30951
Sorry but both are a little long winded, the printer especially so, just go to youtube and search for epineh and you should find a video that sums up the printer in about 2 mins :)
As for spindles, most guys are now going the path of three phase spindles and VFD's, they are mostly silent except for cutting noise, which is still a little noisy. I am using a router for now but the next one is getting a proper spindle.
I will post a link once I find it.
Cheers.

Found one link :

Hi Psytron
The only thing I could get locally was steel bar, aluminium angle and MDF (yes a large MDF job - 25mm MDF construction). So the basics are fine to get locally.
Steppers and controller I got fro the US - Hobbycnc. They are having a 15% off sale at the moment for their 305 lb/in motor kit about US$250, so at the current exchange rate you are looking at around A$400 for the kit which is pretty good. Leadscrews are 16mm ACME from ebay (a guy down south makes them up with a delrin nut- keep an eye out on ebay). Linear bearing I made up using aluminium angle.
As for the spindle there are some cheaper chinese ones on ebay at the moment still around $500 though and without VFD. Also take a look at http://www.automationdirect.com.au, was having a hunt around yesterday and their prices are quite good for VFD's. (really have to do something about the noisy ozito)
Brett.
Hey Brett, do you have any pics of your machine ?
I am trying to put together a nice little servo package for the hobby guys, something people can put together themselves, I am not interested in selling this kind of stuff. Currently I am running my own design of the ELM Chan based servo drives (high power version) and it works really well. I am only using threaded rod leadscrew which adds a lot of mechanical dampening but am gathering parts for an all ballscrew machine so it will be interesting to try out my drives on a much faster machine with a bit of momentum.
Only problem is I am sick of working out of my carport so all is on hold until the shed is finished...getting close now :)
Cheers.
Russell.
Here are some pics.
Notice the threaded 16mm cold rolled steel rails. Nuts and washers on these really strengthen the design and hold it all square. (haven't seen this idea elsewhere). - Dark green nuts and washers from Bunnings.
Max speed 5000mm/min on all axes before failure. I usually run at between 2000 and 3000mm/min (120in/min) for most cuts on softwoods (3-5 mm deep).
Here also is an example of violin back and neck (both cut inside frames - cut one side then flip over and do the other).
Brett.
Just had a look at pics how much did you finish up spending on this project? I can get most of frame materials from Bunnings NZ.I am retired Toolmaker been watching this site for some time have to save for electronics did you get yours from Australia? nothing avail ex NZ.shiney66
