Re: Fixed gantry or column for mill rigidity?

    Hi all,

This is the drawbar to my CAT40, Shizuoka B-5V spindle. It looks in good condition but I still want to take it apart, finish cleaning the caked-on gunk, grease it and put back together...

Re: Fixed gantry or column for mill rigidity?

    Hi Peter,

Right on. I strip the machine down and leave only basic structural elements to run the simulations. Having everything would give me a closer to reality result but I'm basically looking...

Re: Fixed gantry or column for mill rigidity?

Hi Peter, thanks for your insight.

I'm going to load the design in Fusion and try this out again from table/base to tip of the spindle. I did use higher forces previously but only on the column,...

Re: Fixed gantry or column for mill rigidity?

Hey NIC, thanks much for your input.

Yep, in the 2 column version, there's a 6" (~150mm) gap where a 6" square tube would be welded. But a previous comment is making me rethink that. If I go...

Re: Fixed gantry or column for mill rigidity?

    Hi Peter,

Excellent! I thought of expanding concrete since I've used that in other applications (fixing the pool) with success but thought it would be too brittle to withstand deflection and...

Re: Fixed gantry or column for mill rigidity?

    Hi all,

So what is your take on using a single column like above vs two? It would certainly simplify my build quite a bit. Maybe I can insert a brace/spine through the center of the square tubing...

Re: Fixed gantry or column for mill rigidity?

Hey Pippin, thanks for the feedback.

I agree it will be much harder to align those 2 surfaces, perhaps even beyond what I can do. The reason for that is to have a wider column for better support....

Re: Fixed gantry or column for mill rigidity?

    Hey NIC,

That is more or less the latest design, though I added feet to the two columns. I will also be closing the gap between the columns once I know where the will be, etc. It will be quite the...

Hi all, and thanks for the suggestions. Those sent me on an information gathering tour and it's great to see more options. The good thing about using these is that I can do my grinding on the added...

Re: Fixed gantry or column for mill rigidity?

    Hi Andrew,

Yes, I've been looking into that as well. Of course, I would have to true the ways somehow before mounting the rails. Perhaps I can cheat some and shim under the rails, especially if...

Re: Fixed gantry or column for mill rigidity?

Exactly right! I've tried but there's nothing nearby that's any good. I bought this one locally after the seller described it as in "good shape". It's a good boat anchor.. ha! The local ones are all...

Re: Fixed gantry or column for mill rigidity?

    Hi Matec,

Yes, I've seen the gibs. They are adjusted to the max. When that wasn't enough, the previous owner brazed an additional piece to push it in even more. Both axes flop about until you lock...

Re: Fixed gantry or column for mill rigidity?

Hi Peter, much appreciated! That's all above my pay grade. I can barely hacksaw through steel :-)

Speaking of which, I ordered some steel plates and started trying to plane them on my Bridgeport....

Re: Fixed gantry or column for mill rigidity?

Re: Fixed gantry or column for mill rigidity?

    Hi all,

I'm still playing the CAD and mouse :D game with designs. I'm working through vertical at the moment. First, let me describe my newly acquired spindle by saying: it's insanely big!

Re: Fixed gantry or column for mill rigidity?

Thanks for the clarification on the external controllers. If those don't interpret G-code directly, they probably nearly do. It'd be great to understand the Mach (for example) protocol. If...

Re: Fixed gantry or column for mill rigidity?

That is just amazing. Super complex to DIY, however, and I suppose if you threw enough mass at a machine it could probably be made out of marshmallows :)

Re: Fixed gantry or column for mill rigidity?

Yes, I agree. C-frames do limit Y compared to a bridge, and this was another factor leaning me towards a fixed bridge design. As for Z, I guess I would be looking at Z height rather than total axis...

Re: Fixed gantry or column for mill rigidity?

Re: Fixed gantry or column for mill rigidity?

    Much appreciate the feedback, Andrew.

I set out to build a moving gantry many moons ago to cut PCBs. It ended up being 52" x 60" (132x152cm) and mostly routed wood and aluminum parts for itself....
