This is not a true statement. Look at the output of a Geko drive with a scope, go to the Linistepper site and look at the drive scope...

Your 5/8 steel rod is not strong enough unless it is supported, it will flex and you will lose a lot of accuracy.

My take on this is when you have a problem and you can touch, push or move a component or wire and it changes the problem it is probably a bad solder joint.
