  1. Re: Looking for Mach 4 post processor V31 BobCAD/CAM (Mill)

Oh, I already have the Mach 4 stuff all done. I spent a ton of time learning LUA stuff......was pretty painful and required some forum help, but it seems like you can really do a lot with Mach4. I...
  2. Re: Looking for Mach 4 post processor V31 BobCAD/CAM (Mill)

    Thanks!
I do have homing and limit switches. I also run soft limits.
I also have a 7 tool changer, 3D probe, and tool height setter.
Anything else you recommend looking at with this before I use...

Yes. I requested a Mach 4 post. We will see. However there is not one to download.
  4. Looking for Mach 4 post processor V31 BobCAD/CAM (Mill)

Anyone have a proper Mach 4 post processor?

I can only find Mach 3 and I have read there are some differences and possibly some things Mach 4 might not like from a Mach 3 post.

    Or, that a Mach3...

Shorter heads. Not threads. Low profile socket head cap screws. Thread length and engagement is the same. The plate would flex before the bolt head, so all good there.
  6. Re: Ball screw support bearing questions. Are $420 bearings necessary on this machine

Unfortunately there is no way to get shims for these bearings other than to try and make them yourself or pay a fortune for something custom made. Not sure why no one makes an adequate size, but they...
  7. Where can I buy some very thin 47mm OD shims for between 7204 bearings outer races?

I am looking for some outer race shims for 7204 bearings. They are 47mm OD.

I cannot find any really thin shims this size anywhere and not sure where would make them for a reasonably price.
    I...
  8. So I paid about $700 for these bearings....

So I paid about $700 for these bearings. Installed them with the rebuilt ball screws.
I have worse backlash than before on X and just a little better on Y

    X .0021 Backlash
    Y .0019 Backlash
    ...
  9. Re: How are you supposed to hold the ball screw and tighten the nut to spec on these?

Interesting. It does not look like they make a 28mm one though.
  10. Re: How are you supposed to hold the ball screw and tighten the nut to spec on these?

I am a bit paranoid about clamping anything to the screw portion that I just paid so much to have redone.
Everything is easy to get to. So limiting space is not really an issue. Getting the part off...
  11. How are you supposed to hold the ball screw and tighten the nut to spec on these?

I got my ball screws rebuilt and new support bearings. $$$

Now I need to put this stuff back together carefully and tighten the nuts that go against the support bearings to spec.

    I cannot find...
  12. Re: Ball screw support bearing questions. Are $420 bearings necessary on this machine

I finally got a good phone number for NSK and talked to NSK directly which clarifies a lot of things. Now I am full circle back to the original part number I was quoted.

    First of all I confirmed...
  13. Re: Ball screw support bearing questions. Are $420 bearings necessary on this machine

Good info. All the docs I read still make it seem like the matched sets are the preferred way, so I would have never guess they are opting for the universal more. No one has mentioned that before...
  14. Re: Ball screw support bearing questions. Are $420 bearings necessary on this machine

I sure did. Honestly, up until yesterday, it was not so clear what bearings I even needed though. So, I got a price from them, but it was for the first bearing that I think is no longer even a viable...
  15. Re: Ball screw support bearing questions. Are $420 bearings necessary on this machine

I made a summary chart on ISO 4 (P4) vs ISO 5 (P5) for this size bearing (from charts on a website I found).

The real possible difference seems to be as follows:

    -.00005" possible extra Bore...
  16. Re: Ball screw support bearing questions. Are $420 bearings necessary on this machine

Yeah, C9 = Heavy Preload is correct. It took me awhile to figure that one out. I actually found another series bearing and manufacturer where C9 means Light Preload, but that does not apply here.

  17. Re: Ball screw support bearing questions. Are $420 bearings necessary on this machine

Okay, so I have been doing a ton of research on these bearings the last week. I think the first number I was quoted is completely wrong. I sent pictures off and asked for second and 3rd opinions and...
  18. Re: Ball screw support bearing questions. Are $420 bearings necessary on this machine

You have any recommendations for a specific coupler to go from 22mm keyed shaft (motor) to 13mm Ball screw (smooth shaft)? They are so far apart.
  19. Re: Ball screw support bearing questions. Are $420 bearings necessary on this machine

By the way, was looking around for couplers. Hard to find anything with a 6mm key way and/or 22mm shaft. The motor shafts are 22m, with a 6mm wide key. I am not sure on the ball screw diameter, it is...
  20. Re: Ball screw support bearing questions. Are $420 bearings necessary on this machine

That is a nice tool. Is there anywhere I can buy something suitable? Finding time to make something is a challenge....and no mill at the moment, but I have a lathe, welders, and drill press.

    I...
  21. Re: Ball screw support bearing questions. Are $420 bearings necessary on this machine

I will likely just live with what I get after the ball screw service and new bearings....quit trying to provoke higher OCD LOL :)

I had thought about changing that hex screw to a cap and maybe...
  22. Re: Ball screw support bearing questions. Are $420 bearings necessary on this machine

Yeah, I do wonder if some of that accuracy is fudged in with no backlash compensation, encoder characteristics, original DC servos capability etc. as well though. Dunno.

I sent the ball screws to...
  23. Re: Ball screw support bearing questions. Are $420 bearings necessary on this machine

I appreciate and completely agree to what your saying here. And yes, at this point there is no turning back really. I could have just ran it as/is, but I have OCD and I am a perfectionist. This can...
  24. Re: Ball screw support bearing questions. Are $420 bearings necessary on this machine

Yes, there is no spec on backlash in any of the manuals unfortunately. I have no way to know how good it would have been new or what the allowable slop should be over time. There are specs on...
  25. Re: Ball screw support bearing questions. Are $420 bearings necessary on this machine

I am not buying bearings from that website (it is way high on there), but I did get a better price from that same companies local location. That was mainly a link to show the bearing specs. The price...
  26. Re: Ball screw support bearing questions. Are $420 bearings necessary on this machine

I measured the backlash in several ways. First by just jogging the machine back and forth and measuring it (with a dial indicator). I also measured at the nut that adjusts the support bearing...
  27. Ball screw support bearing questions. Are $420 bearings necessary on this machine?

I decided I want to get the backlash out of my 1978 Pratt & Whitney Tapemate C retrofit (Fanuc machine basically).

It seems like the backlash is in the ball screws, but I wanted to replace the...
  28. Re: How to adjust or get rid of backlash caused by ball screw support bearing (fixed

Does it normally take a lot of pressure to see the movement?
I could mount the ballscrew in my lathe and then put an indicator against the nut and push back and forth on the nut. Is this good...
  29. Re: How to adjust or get rid of backlash caused by ball screw support bearing (fixed

Yeah, the table is getting oil. The ways stay wet with oil and I have it programmed to run the oil every time the X or Y motor moves. I also put a tape line on the pump to make sure it goes down. I...
  30. Re: How to adjust or get rid of backlash caused by ball screw support bearing (fixed

Well, apparently the reason I get no movement is because it takes a bar to even move the table. I took the ball screw out.
I could not move the table manually with both hands and feet. It is a big...
