  1. Re: Chinese high speed spindle for metal milling

    +1 for everything mactec54 said.

Can you be more specific about what type of metal cutting you want to do, what is the smallest and largest cutters you want to use in steel?

    I was looking for a...

Screw options for small knee mill

I have an old knee mill, made from castings.
It is table top, so about half or 2/3 the size of the commonly known Sieg X2.

It will be used for manual milling only, no CNC.
    It is fairly accurate...
  5. Re: AC sewing motor as spindle.....Any advice?

What type and size of machine will the motor go on?
What is the power you expect to need( HP or Watts of the motor) ?

Re: milling part off in Z

First thing is to see if the manufacturer has instructions for setup and calibration.
Second is support services from the manufacturer.

Machining in rotary axis is very suseptible to errors, so...

    Re: Horrible Surface Finish

You have a tapered gib that doesn't make full contact along it's entire length?
Can you use the DTI near the gap to correlate the gap to the deflection?

In any event the gib needs to make full...

    Re: Horrible Surface Finish

Your mill is easily capable of better than .005" which is likely a main source of the problem. I suggest continuing with the DTI across multiple locations to hunt down the exact source of the .005".

    So If I understand correctly:
    - Before you started adjusting the gib you had .010" play in the head along the Z axis. Was this strictly parallel to the axis of the column? Then this is backlash, it...

OK, so you have a quill. The quill is locked down good and tight at all times , right?
There is lots of opportunity for problems between the cutter tip ...through the head...to the column.

    Re: Horrible Surface Finish

I'm no G code expert but I don't see a problem with your code. Arcs are programmed as arcs, not as a series of small straight lines.

In my opinion it is not a software issue.

    You've done...

  21. Re: Spindle Regrinding Service for Benchtop Machines

The short R8 is an interesting idea in theory but it in reality it comes up short.
For a machine made to use a standard R8, retrofitting a short R8 doesn't offer many advantages.

CL, I am having trouble understanding your idea, could you post a picture or sketch?
  23. Re: thoughts on increasing rigidity of x2 mill? (besides coulmn brace)

I think you should look further into why the Z axis gibs are coming loose.
    Cracks, as mentioned.
is it not tight enough to begin with? That would cause a lot of vibrations.

    If the gib is tight...
