Re: Tool setter wiring help UB1

There are two switches in parallel. One is for the offset, the other is for over travel. I don’t remember which colors are which though. You should be able to decipher the instructions with that in...

    Re: Chris' G0704 build

Well, I destroyed the seal getting it out. I pulled the carter spring out of the spare and installed it. It runs a little cooler but it's still too hot. The new seal should be here this week....

    Re: Chris' G0704 build

I might give this a shot if I can get the seal out without destroying it. Actually I have a spare...
  4. Re: Speeds, Feeds, and Strategies for Bench Top Mills

Yeah that sounds like a lot of work. I can pull mine in about a minute now.

    Re: Chris' G0704 build

I got the 17404 seal in last night. Even though it's spec'd for a 44.45mm shaft it still feels a bit tight on the spindle. I ran it for a bit and the spindle started getting warmer than I'm...
  6. Re: Speeds, Feeds, and Strategies for Bench Top Mills

I like measuring the temp as close as physically possible to the bearing.

If you're having trouble setting the bearings try setting it like you normally do then tapping both ends of the spindle...
  7. Re: Speeds, Feeds, and Strategies for Bench Top Mills

What brand of bearings did you go with?

Here's a post from Forrest Addy on spindle bearing temps. They're talking about lathes in this thread but it all applies. I've learned more about machining...

    Re: Chris' G0704 build

After the 2 hour break in the quill was 97F in a 67F garage (I love CA weather. I'm wearing shorts today). I measured the sound at 76dB at 6750 rpm. The spindle sounds so much better. I think this...

    Re: Chris' G0704 build

The 32007 showed up at lunch time so I went ahead and swapped the bearings. These NSK bearings are a LOT smoother than the Timkens. I pulled the idler bearing off the spindle pulley and put a new...

    Re: Chris' G0704 build

I received the NSK 32005 bearings over the weekend. I opened one and it feels a LOT smoother than even the good sets of Timkens ever did. The 32007 P5 is supposed to be here today. I haven't used my...
  11. Re: Speeds, Feeds, and Strategies for Bench Top Mills

Bad bearing! BADDDD bearing!!!! Impressive. I haven't had any go bad in that manner. Usually mine have just started getting noisy.

    Re: Chris' G0704 build

This morning I took the spindle all apart again. I cleaned both bearings thoroughly. I mounted the spindle in the 4 jaw, dialed it in, recut the shoulder that the lower bearing rests against, took a...

    Re: Chris' G0704 build

No problem. I didn't take it as an insult. Let me put it this way, I've rebuilt RC engines that spun up to 35k rpm and were WAY more sensitive to misalignment since the early 90's. I actually did it...

    Re: Chris' G0704 build

I've rebuilt the spindle in this machine at least half a dozen times. I also put a new set of tapered roller bearings in my 13x40 gear head lathe. I *THINK* I understand what I'm doing by now. I...

    Re: Chris' G0704 build

Which SKF part numbers are you looking at? I found FAG makes the 32005 and 32007 in their X-XL-P5 variant. I can't seem to find the 32005 though.
  16. Re: Speeds, Feeds, and Strategies for Bench Top Mills

That looks good. Buy a can of "Open Gear Lube" and hit the gears at the end of the machine. It will quiet them down quite a bit.

    Re: Chris' G0704 build

Well, they are noisy and I can hear occasional popping at low speeds. The popping seems to go away at higher speeds but I think that it's just being masked by the motor and bearing whine. I tried oil...

    Re: Chris' G0704 build

This new set of bearings sound terrible. I need to find a source for better bearings.
  19. Re: Speeds, Feeds, and Strategies for Bench Top Mills

That's great. Start making some chips.

I sold my last lathe because I needed cash to convert the G0704 to CNC and I didn't think I'd need it anymore. That was a huge mistake. I couldn't imagine...

    Re: Upgrade driver or stepper?

Yep, it was a SWAG. In reality I'm sure he'll just be happy if it there's a noticeable improvement.

    Re: Chris' G0704 build

Thanks. I think it may not be perfect but it will be better than the cap that's there now. I'm just going to try it out and see how much leakage there is. If I have to I can use grease, RTV silicone...
  22. Re: Speeds, Feeds, and Strategies for Bench Top Mills

My goal isn’t to move to BT30 tool holders. I’d like a spindle that’s built for CNC with multiple bearings on each end and that’s rated for 6-10k RPM.

    Re: Chris' G0704 build

I guess I’m committed at this point. I bored the end of the quill to 64.5mm. The seals will be here tomorrow. Then I can finish the bore.

  24. Re: Speeds, Feeds, and Strategies for Bench Top Mills

Yep, mine has paid for itself many times over too. Honestly a used VMC in my price range may or may not be better in the long run. I have one car of a three car garage for the machines. I could make...

    Re: Chris' G0704 build

The bearings in my spindle started sounding rough again. I pulled them out and the grease was long gone. I guess I don't have a choice but to move to oil lubrication. I machine a fair amount of...
  26. Speeds, Feeds, and Strategies for Bench Top Mills

Maybe I should have qualified my statement. I really can’t see dumping another big chunk of cash on this machine again. I spent around $2k this time around.

There’s always going to be things that...
  27. Re: Speeds, Feeds, and Strategies for Bench Top Mills

I think we've all learned a lot along the way. I tried to go the cheap route on a bunch of things and wished I hadn't later on. My latest upgrades have made the machine a lot nicer to use than what I...
  28. Re: G0602 Z-axis lead screw / gearbox removal?

That's great. I'm glad you got it figured out.
  29. Re: G0602 Z-axis lead screw / gearbox removal?

It looks like you remove the feed rod, remove the coupler, remove the cover with the three screws on the right end. Do similar on the left end. Then it appears that there's a set screw in the middle...

    Re: Chris' G0704 build

The LED on the interface lights up when the probe is plugged in. When the probe is tripped the LED turns off.
