Hi GypsyTinker,
Did you manage to find anyone nearby? We have a pretty active group in the Washington DC area. While it's not very close to you some of our members may live a bit closer to you....

Hi GypsyTinker,
Did you manage to find anyone nearby? We have a pretty active group in the Washington DC area. While it's not very close to you some of our members may live a bit closer to you....
With a name like Benz your tools have to be expensive!
I saw this in one of the trade pubs covering the IWF show in Atlanta, an add-on oscillating cutter head for any CNC with tangential control.

Arrg! CNCZone just ate my reply post. I'll try again later. Nice job on the design. I'm interested in seeing what you would do with adding ocillating motion
I like the design, it looks well thought out.
A couple of random thoughts...
I wasn't sure the purpose of the pigtail (# 220) in your drawing. At first glance I thought it a spring to preload...
I've actually seen these machines in person, they're used to cut boat sails. A small stepper rotates the blade holder.

Hi Peter,
Do you happen to remember anything about the shape or design of the bit? I'm curious how they keep it from burning or fuzzing up the mat board.
Gordon
I'm guessing these are out of my budget, have you priced any?
Do you think the pulleys are needed for gear reduction? Or is that for some other purpose? I'd think a stepper motor of the size...
Have you seen this video as well?

That looks like a simple design for a knifeholder. Just some aluminum bar stock and a clamping plate for the blade. I...
Maybe we can just get lovebugjunkie to do it for both of us ;^)
That's a drag knife, not the tangential knife he's asking about.
I'm curious about adding a tangential knife to my Joes hybrid but haven't done anything about it.
Have you looked at this video?

Here's one with a Taig spindle, smaller than MT2 but the same general idea.

For donnaj867 and other newcomers, no worries, newcomers were warmly welcomed. I was pleasantly surprised to see so many newcomers that ranged from those just building or converting their first CNC...
Yep, no worries ordering from Keling. I've bought several things from him in the past. The only delay was when he told me an item was out of stock and I ordered it anyway.
I'll send you an invite to the CNCZone social group I set up for DC area CNCers. There's also the CAMS CNC group that has monthly meetings in Lorton, VA. CAMS also has every other month general...
The bearings slide on with little to no apparent play between bearing inner race and the lead screw. Some of my bearings needed a bit of polishing before they would slide on with hand pressure.

Hi Harry, The lead screws are a perfect fit in the bearings. All of the components have been torture tested by many many builders and everything goes together very wellwith adjustments easily made...
Thanks Scott, hope I can make it this year. I heard great things from people who went last year.
BTW, Don't forget to take down or update the lodging & location links on www.machcnc.com they still...
Nicely done.
I gave serious consideration to a rotating nut design for lengthening my machine but am probably going to use a rack & pinion drive since I have had some small amount of experience...
Great job, from your photos it's easy to see the workmanship that went into your build.
Where did you get your lead screws? I didn't see any multistart screws at Mcmaster longer than 6'
Are you...
Great idea, I'll be watching your thread. Sorry I don't have any bright ideas for you. I assume you've already messaged the starters of these other threads...

Rick,
I should have updated this post. I emailed about the same time I posted this and your great support team answered quickly. Thanks again.

Do you ever have the feeling your computer isn't actually connected to the 'net? . . .
. . . Sorry you wasted your money on those. Maybe your local butcher will swap them for some steaks . . .

The cost question is hard to answer directly since it depends so much on how well you shop, shipping costs, and several other factors.
I'm not the best representation of costs since I got some of...
I have some that look identical to those. They have a great deal of play and only have a single row of bearings. I wouldn't waste my time using those.
Try these instead:

I'm finishing my build now, I've been working on it a few hours at a time (with only a few full days thrown in) since late August. I could have done it in a week or two working full time on it.

You should seal the MDF with a mixture of glue and water and then paint it. I suggest painting with a shellac based finish, avoid using latex paint as a first coat. Zinnser BIN primer works great...
While I agree that carbide is necessary for any serious work in MDF I think you're exaggerating about HSS not lasting a minute.
Last week when setting up a new machine I'm building I pulled out...
Put your email address on the wait list, they've come back in stock at least 2 times since last May when I bought one. It's a great router and a great deal. later if you decide to buy a K2 router...
