Could be any one of a number of reasons.

Basic things to check first would be :

Are the mirrors aligned properly.

Is the laser mounted at a perfect 90 degrees to the bed.

You cold buy yourself a ready made 40w co2 laser cutting machine from ebay which are only about £300. Strip the mirrors, co2 tube and psu to install on your cnc.

Otherwise a 6-10w laser diode...

Sounds like it could be outputting code that uses G1 commands (maybe also G2, G3 etc) for all moves instead of inserting G0 rapid moves in between the cuts.

ta, as a temporary measure I managed to hook it up with a fused 13amp plug and some 20amp cable which seems to have done the trick.

The round 1.5KW aircooled spindles are deadly quiet. I just ditched a 1050w router for a chinese made spindle from ebay and couldnt believe the difference.
