Re: MACH, Linux CNC, Acorn, UCCNC, other?

Yeah, read that's possible from the missed part where it read "hook a differential linear scale direct to the servo drive". See edit right after I wrote my initial comment. Fast-read and thought you...

Re: MACH, Linux CNC, Acorn, UCCNC, other?

Useless, no offence. Won't deal with the mechanical (backlash, screw compensation, etc etc), which is what's all about when you talk "feedback" for machine-tools.
Linuxcnc has a robust PID that...

Re: MACH, Linux CNC, Acorn, UCCNC, other?

    5A-75E ($20) + LinuxCNC2.9.1(free) = RT Feedback 5ax all-day.

Re: MACH, Linux CNC, Acorn, UCCNC, other?

Hi Joe. Coincidence I was looking at the ClearPath-MCVC series a few hours earlier. Even the servo drives are getting ditched out for built-in logic apparently...

Re: MACH, Linux CNC, Acorn, UCCNC, other?

LinuxCNC is a "Real-Time" solution. And so it won't get closer as it get to a modern industrial controller(less their proprietary algorithms and compressors, perhaps).

    Compute is irrelevant if...

Re: Linear scale: Glass or Magnetic?

Nice one, cncmakers001. Appreciate this knowledge sharing. Who wins in terms of thermal stability? Hands down the glass I would guess, are those magnetic a contender on this aspect?

    Also, I can't...
  7. re: Getting started in CNC career - advice for my young son

Started as a two guy op back in early 2000's, went epidemic asia-wide in 2007 after adding 12 staffers, and pandemic int'l in 2017 with 300 heads. Still putting a 10mil rev annual without any sign of...
  8. Re: Seeking Help with MESA 5I25 Board Replacement

    Get an inexpensive 5A-75E fpga board, replace U23, U24, U25, U26, U27, U28 with 5V tolerant "SN74LVC245APWR" in TSSOP-20 package. You have 96 IOs total (48 inputs and 48 outputs).

    Firmware can be...
  9. re: Getting started in CNC career - advice for my young son

So. What do we do with this kid, he's a natural after all. You hire him? or I expatriate him to Guangzhou where we have a 12k sqm floor operation running?
Ps. Canada here, West-Island side, Mtl, Qc.
  10. re: Getting started in CNC career - advice for my young son

I don't know putin, never meet him and he ain't on my meeting schedule. Same for xi, the biben and all the others, they can all go f themselves if you allow me to be explicit here. Like I said...
  11. re: Getting started in CNC career - advice for my young son

No s_hit. Hearing the delusional utter bs and hostile absurdities coming from that side of the pond, I would pro-actively gear up to ensure my society's survival too. Who wants to be the next Iraq,...
  12. re: Getting started in CNC career - advice for my young son

I don't know, neither give a f about spies and others who don't mind their own business mind you lol. Money Talks at the end of the day, and Chinese partners are on that exact same frequency...
  13. re: Getting started in CNC career - advice for my young son

No offence Joe, but all that sounds much like brainwashing psyop coming out from the typical CNN jukebox and MSM bs (aka "West's Group-Suicide Cult"). Out of experience we've been doing business with...
  14. re: Getting started in CNC career - advice for my young son

Politics aside; I'm not exactly subscribed to the west's group-suicide cult trademark and therefore outsource, and will increase outsourcing to our Chinese partners as much as I possibly can, so to...
  15. re: Getting started in CNC career - advice for my young son

Dad seems to be all-in the success of his son judging from the OP/post. Something tells me he'd do and be a great investor :)

Not suggesting top dollars, ofc not, but rather niche-up first, start...

    Linear scale: Glass or Magnetic?

Hi experts. I'm thinking of adding feedback to a cnc retrofit and aware there are minuscule magnetic scales for that purpose. I do not have any experience with mag scales, just find them attractive...
  17. re: Getting started in CNC career - advice for my young son

If the kid aims at an employee/employer 9~5 slave endeavor he might as well just go work for eg. an Amazon Fulfillment Center at double the minimum and his job-shop salary.

    Success is all in the...
  18. Re: Getting started in CNC career - advie for my young son

If he is a natural as claimed you should invest in his special skillset and promote self-employment/entrepreneurship rather than selling to an employer.
  19. Re: Alternative material(s) used for gibs in machine-tools.

Oh good god look at that zippy zipping thing. First time I see something like it, impressive.
Next week's cnczone post New Machine Build- "Zero-Gravity Lightspeed Lathe (in-a-vacuum)" :)

  20. Re: Alternative material(s) used for gibs in machine-tools.

Wait, what? Magnetic Levitation railing/ways for machine-tools is already a thing? Honestly I was making a joke about it (maglev), are you saying this exist already?
  21. Re: Alternative material(s) used for gibs in machine-tools.

Cheap?! haha you're joking right? I swear the amount of man-hours that goes into those things just so to have them make a part within tolerance is mindblowing. Not to mention the time spent dialing...

Re: please help to measure 300 outside diameter

Greater than 100mm in the <10um tol are CCM jobs normally. Presumably you already have a fully error-compensated screw as a reference somewhere in the shop, on-machine probing is the second option.
  23. Re: Alternative material(s) used for gibs in machine-tools.

That's one of those you know, rewards are so much greater psychologically than mechanically ;) I'll update regardless.

Interestingly enough I've spoken with someone locally who has similar range...
  24. Re: Alternative material(s) used for gibs in machine-tools.

I can carve my name on mine with my fingernail. Never tried (lol) but sure feels that way. Stupidly accurate over the whole bed though, aligned in all planes (5um), but that's the thing about it - if...

Re: How to Select CNC Machining Tolerances

You're lucky to have the freedom to do that as a 'CNC machinist', whatever that means. Presumably you meant "Machine Operator" rather?

For me, if I get to override my chief engineer's tolerancing...
  26. Re: Alternative material(s) used for gibs in machine-tools.

Guys, that's awesome. Sweet knowledge based forum packed with talents, got to be said. Learning everyday, and grateful for the link-up from a machine-builder (thx, Peter).

    Craig seems to have The...
  27. Re: Alternative material(s) used for gibs in machine-tools.

All fair points and knowledge sharing, much appreciated for that. I'll keep those steel gibs in that case.

Throwing away my perfectly fine Chinese import lathe and finding democratically-correct...
  28. Re: Looking for 3D CAD and CAM software recommendations

Hey Peter. I'm not finger pointing at one in particular while in reality there are just too many to expose. I can see where the cad data comes from by looking at the metadata with notepad+, for...
  29. Alternative material(s) used for gibs in machine-tools.

Hello machine-builder experts. Got my weekend scheduled in the hobby shop and planning to machine new gibs for a benchtop lathe.

Long story short; I've had the bedways of my benchtop lathe...
  30. Re: Looking for 3D CAD and CAM software recommendations

Lots of loud CAD claims embedding surface classes & curvature continuity features however they are just that, box standard with little to no tol options. Rare we've received parts from low-end CADs...
