  1. Re: Some very worthwhile insights into engine design from the late Professor Gordon B

I still have my 2-stroke design book from Dr. Blair. Good stuff !!!!

  2. Re: Thread count considerations when incorporating a fastener into a design

The "thread count" is normally referred to as UNF(fine pitch) or UNC(coarse pitch). Fine pitch has two advantages. More threads in contact and stronger fastener due to greater cross section of the...
  3. Re: Affordable toolroom mill, european market.

Or maybe a used Deckel, Hermle or Micron. We are located in the USA and use a Hermle with a plain table and also have one with the universal rotary table.

  4. Re: Novel 3-axis CNC Mill design - does it exist?

Bostomatic vertical mills did just what you asked. We had two 1980 1440 models. They were employed to produce rotary cuttind dies and still are. Bostomatic was bought by Micron. Now they are...

    Re: Homemade lathe spindle

Preloded angular contact bearings should have no end play and permit high speed (rpm). In duplex arrangement, they should also handle axial thrust for drilling.

  6. Re: Mechanism techniques used for a high speed z axis

Possibly a linear motor? No ball screw or nut is required. Draw back is either a power-off brake or counter balance is need for safety.

  7. Re: Pin size formula for shaft diameter size.

I didn't find anything on pin size relative to shaft dia. either. Key/keway sizes are ~4:1 . Because a key generally has more shear length, you may want to be a little strong on the pin dia. If ...
  8. Re: Parked steel wheels are flat spotted?

How many wheels; what are they attached to; were they attached to shafts in pairs (like on overhead hoists?); must they be refurbed to equal dia.'s or to a prescribed dia.?

    Re: Types of Inserts?

Look into the insert manufacturers on line catalogs. Most have good tech/application sections full of info.

    Re: Drill Press or Mill?

Like awerby said, see if you can locate a used turret mill (Bridgeport or clone). much more solid and adds to your shops capability.
  11. Re: Making a decision on a vise. Any input?

In every shop where I specified machines and/or tooling, I specifed QUALITY and vises were always Kurt. The old "hack" buy the best you can't afford is true. Better quality production, longer tooling...

    Re: BSW Thread Calcs... help!!

Another factoid?? In the 19th century there was a need to supply accurate meter standards to the world governments. SIP was supposed to manufacture them. Then SIP discovered the existing government...

    Re: CUTTING CIRCLES!

Could be mechanical. Slop (backlash) in ballscrew(s)/nuts, excess motion due to loose bearings in the ballscrew support bearings(fixed end), compliance in the ballnut mount.

    Could also be the...

    Wire add. printing

I don't know where this subject belongs, move it at your pleasure.LOL

I saw an article on line where they used a wire welder on a 3D printing type device. I assume this had to be a fairly large...
  16. Re: would like to get into precision machining..whats a good project?

You could make a motorized spindle for a DIY lathe or mill. That requires precise ID bearing bores in alignment with other surface geometries. The spindle shaft requires the same degree of precision...
  17. Re: Polishing on a Lathe - Ballpark Parameters

What's the surface finish before you start polishing? 1045 can be hard. Has your piece(s) been hardened? You might look into a Cogsdill single point burnishing tool, could be used on other finishing...

    Re: Cheap ballscrew runout

"Only" .003" of endplay??? With proper preload on an angular contact bearing there should be "0.000"" endplay.

Re: Z axis stage capstan driven

For a torque multiplier you could have a planetary gear system inside or below your capstan drum. You might also place a second capstan drum above the existing capstan to operate an added...

Re: Z axis stage capstan driven

The motor has 1Nm of holding torque when it has power. It has zero holding power when the power is interupted unless it has a power-off brake. That said, you may have enough friction in the mechanics...

The capstan drum diameter is .035m? (1.38 inches) Without power, the motor has no holding torque.

Re: Z axis stage capstan driven

Did you consider the mechanical advantage of the capstan's radius? Also, does the motor have a "power-off" brake in case of power loss?

    Re: RBC Fibroid dry bearings?

Check the material spec's. Some perform better if lubed, some swell if lubed. Is the bearing going to see contact with hydraulic oil?

  26. Re: V Groove bearings for rotary axis?

It would be even less expensive with (2) stationary non-eccentric and (1) adjustable eccentric bearings. Assuming of course they're sized properly. That way the center of the assembly shoul not move...

    Re: RBC Fibroid dry bearings?

As long as you can keep the velocity below the recommended surface speed (with some safety factor) for the weight the bearings will see, should be OK.
