    Re: 110v VFD's. Any issues?

I wanted to have a power shut-off switch right before my 240 volt receptacle so that I could unplug it safely.

    I'm pretty sure this one would work but just wanted to be sure before I order it;

    Re: 110v VFD's. Any issues?

The neutral wire doesn't prevent ground loops per se, but buy using the neutral wire for my 120v it keeps everything coming from the same source, which does prevent ground loops.

    Re: 110v VFD's. Any issues?

Yes I asked because I wanted to learn what to do in that situation. I will probably be using that wire now to avoid the potential of ground loops.

    Re: 110v VFD's. Any issues?

Simple answer, because it usually cost less and saves time running 10/3.

    50' of 10/3 costs around $75.

50' of 10/2 + 50' of 12/2 costs around $90, plus it takes twice as long to install since...

    Re: 110v VFD's. Any issues?

There was already power run there from the main box. I'm running the 240 from the same box.

    Re: 110v VFD's. Any issues?

So if I'm just doing this - now - for the VFD power (240 volt) but running the 4 wire cable (two hots, a neutral and the ground) what do I do with the neutral wire? Just put a wire nut on it until...

    Re: 110v VFD's. Any issues?

Could you please clarify, I thought I understood everything but now I'm confused, above you stated that I needed to use a 4 wire #10 cable (two hots, a neutral and the ground) run to the filter/VFD...

    Re: 110v VFD's. Any issues?

Yes that's why I think it would be better to just wire for 240v now. Plus I can get a 2.2kw spindle for about the same price as the 1.5kw 120v spindle. Might as well just do it right the first time....

    Re: 110v VFD's. Any issues?

Will this same outlet work if I decide to use 220 instead of 120?

What about the 10/2 Romex? Would I need to get 10/3 Romex if I decide to use 220 volts instead?

    Re: 110v VFD's. Any issues?

Correct. I'm amazed by how often people call what is cable "wire".

But aren't the color of the wires inside different in 10-3?

10-2 is black, white and bare copper for ground. I thought 10-3...

    Re: 110v VFD's. Any issues?

I reread this thread from the beginning and think I found a problem.

Since I am using the 110 volt 1.5kw VFD, shouldn't I be using 10-2 wire instead of 10-3 wire?

As I understand it I will...

Is there a specification that I should look for that tells me how flexible the cable is?

    Re: 110v VFD's. Any issues?

Your photo says no pigtails. How should you connect the shield of the spindle cable?

As I understand it the shield needs to be connected at BOTH ends.

I was going to pigtail it and connect it...

    Re: 110v VFD's. Any issues?

I have been working on a diagram that shows what I need to do to install the VFD correctly.

It's not completely finished, but before I go too far can someone check it for accuracy?

Why? Is that because the amperage is too high for a UPS?

According to Lincoln Electrics EMI manual a properly sized UPS is fine. I will post a link to their manual tonight when I get home from work.

Do you have a link to the EMI filter that you posted?

    I was going to use a disconnect switch next to the outlet, possibly this one;

    Re: 110v VFD's. Any issues?

Yes this will be permanent in wall install with cable run inside conduit.

I'll then use a cable like you see used on a stove and use that to connect from the wall outlet to the VFD.

Is 8 gauge wire with a 30 amp wall outlet, and a 25 Amp circuit breaker correct? It's going around 30 - 40 feet max.
