  1. Re: Avid Z stage, Clearpath motor and a 22 pound Spindle. Z drops when powered off.

the hard brake occurs when there are no more step instructions to process. Joe is of course right about mach losing its place at estop, but these CP steppers have their own buffer, albeit much...
  2. Re: Avid Z stage, Clearpath motor and a 22 pound Spindle. Z drops when powered off.

I can only speak for my setup - I'm not a pro by any stretch.
    1. The motor models I chose are specifically designed to replace a stepper. they are a servo inside but externally they don't provide...
  3. Re: Avid Z stage, Clearpath motor and a 22 pound Spindle. Z drops when powered off.

My Motors are CPM-SDSK-3421P-ELN. The motor can be energized, i.e. power applied, but there is an enable signal that determines if the output shaft is "free" or locked to the step commands .powered...
  4. Re: Avid Z stage, Clearpath motor and a 22 pound Spindle. Z drops when powered off.

That depends on what you do with the enable signal to the CP motor. You can wire the enable high and they wont drop (or coast) till power is removed. But if you do that, an E-stop will stop the train...

    Re: Using Variables

I typed my stuff in notepad then simply ran it using Mach4. For parts that got me stuck I used the MDI panel. Thats how I figured it out and tested it. I tried the g-code simulator which was great -...

    Re: Using Variables

I'm not trying to have the CAM software spit out logical code. I was simply trying to do it myself using logical constructs. Which is possible to do, just not with my version of Mach4.
    I was trying...

    Re: Using Variables

Mach 4 Hobby ($100) does not allow While.Do or anything in the FanucB instruction set (While Do is part of that set). For that support I need Mach4 Industrial at $1400.

    Re: Using Variables

I disagree. I was trying to learn gcode syntax and flow from the beginning using simple projects like flattening and pocketing. I got my flattening and pocketing done with relatively few lines of...

    Re: G2 code help

Well I found that Mach4 Hobby only supports a subset of the G codes so I can't use a WHILE loop to make this all easier, but I got what I needed using M98 loop and G12 to cut my pockets holes. I...
  10. Re: Avid Z stage, Clearpath motor and a 22 pound Spindle. Z drops when powered off.

I am not running steppers, CP doesn't make a motor with a brake, there is no room to add a friction component to the shaft on the stage and a third party Nema 34 sized brake is $500!

    I'm going to...

    Using Variables

Using Mach4 with ESS and I am trying to get familiar with Gcode before I start using CAM to create it. Just making a back and forth pass incrementing Y each time to surface the spoilboard for my wood...
  12. Re: Avid Z stage, Clearpath motor and a 22 pound Spindle. Z drops when powered off.

Yea, I'm thinking about that. A vertical bar with a caliper type of brake is another idea. Comes down to a Brake or a counterweight So many options . . .. . .thanks for the feedback.
  13. Re: Avid Z stage, Clearpath motor and a 22 pound Spindle. Z drops when powered off.

Apologize for the delay in reply. something happened to the forums database and my logon got mangled - support kept sending instructions on how to reset a password and that never worked. Finally...
  14. Re: Clearpath Motor coasting past the limit switch ?

I slowed down the travel and changed the switches, it's working well now. That was my problem, I expected it be fast and work and it just isn't like that. Physics kicking my butt again.
    I would...

    Re: G2 code help

My controller is Mach4 and an ESS from Warp9
I would swear that I have done that and the circle starts at the XY given and that coordinate becomes the "top" of the circle. i.e. Y2.0 is the top and...
  16. Re: Avid Z stage, Clearpath motor and a 22 pound Spindle. Z drops when powered off.

There is very little area to get to the ballscrew on this Avid stage, but I might be able to reach the coupling... I'll check that out.

    G2 code help

I'm just getting started. While I have Aspire and its next on my to-do list, I'm trying to learn by drilling my new spoil-board using just gcode on mach4 MDI window. I'm trying to make 1 inch...
  18. Re: Avid Z stage, Clearpath motor and a 22 pound Spindle. Z drops when powered off.

    A Cable.. Thats genius!

CP doesn't make a braked servo , there is an aftermarket generic one for nema34 motors but it's pricey.
  19. Re: Avid Z stage, Clearpath motor and a 22 pound Spindle. Z drops when powered off.

Sounds like I am right on target then. I have 8 inches of Z travel so conventional and gas springs would be inconsistent over that length and gas springs are indeed resistive to sudden movement.

  20. Avid Z stage, Clearpath motor and a 22 pound Spindle. Z drops when powered off.

My Z axis drops when the motors are disabled. I'm using Clearpath motors on an AVID Z stage with a 22 pound 3 kw Water cooled spindle so I imagine that's the reason its an issue for me and not a...
  21. Re: Clearpath Motor coasting past the limit switch ?

Yea I'll move the switches. I changed the acceleration and that does the trick, but I'm playing with fire by not allowing some overtravel. I guess I can only hope the overtravel is consistent
  22. Re: Clearpath Motor coasting past the limit switch ?

Increase Acceleration also increases Deceleration? I had not considered that. I assume you could control each independently.

A typical prox switch doesn't typically have much more range than 1/8...
  23. Clearpath Motor coasting past the limit switch ?

I am using Clearpath motors on my DIY router. Mach 4 on a win10 current model PC and a PMDX-126 BOB and ESS. I have been fighting the HOME limit switches. It seems that the motor coasts past the...
  24. Re: PMDX-126 and Clearpath - Drive signals are too low voltage.

I want to commend both Clearpath and PMDX for taking a serious interest in this. They both jumped on it with vigor, and as stated, the problem is abated. I'm completely satisfied in thier sincerity...
  25. Re: PMDX-126 and Clearpath - Drive signals are too low voltage.

Thanks for the offer - I would love to see a scope pattern of the signal levels you are seeing on your installation that does work.

I hope to fix the current investment, but I will look there...
  26. Re: PMDX-126 and Clearpath - Drive signals are too low voltage.

From cncroom's page re: UB1 Looks like I would face the same problem. Diff mode is specifically warned against in the CP docs. I just can't win.
  27. Re: PMDX-126 and Clearpath - Drive signals are too low voltage.

I was eager to make a motor move before then. I only get weekends to work on this.
But I did talk to them before I bought and other than making a good case for Mach4 vs Mach3 (which I already...
  28. Re: PMDX-126 and Clearpath - Drive signals are too low voltage.

Saw that note too. I assumed the 126 was sourcing the signal with a transistor not driving it with an op amp. But I didn't trace the circuit. If that is the case I am going to need a buffer circuit...
  29. PMDX-126 and Clearpath - Drive signals are too low voltage.

    New build

Clearpath SDSK motors aren't responding to step and direction signals from the PMDX-126. I'm using Test mode of the PMDX-126.

I don't see the signals from the PMDX-126 in the...
