i recently did a text projection onto a sphere using solids as well as surfaces and it was pretty quick. im using version 10 however.
- the reason i was mentioning the c axis might have trouble is...
depends on the orientation of the text. C axis lathe cant cut the same way as a 3 axis mill, due to lack of a Y axis. just because they both have 3 axis doesnt mean they work the same, if the text...
theres a ton of ways to do that part. surface flowline, parallel, project, swept 2d wireframe. etc
use curves to keep the tool going in the desired direction.
If you were trying to do this without spending "big bucks", why would you post in a mastercam forum (if you dont already have it/access to it)?
just my 2 cents.
but if you were trying to do it...
Mastercam Version helps as well....
edit (i just saw that you are trying this on a c axis lathe)
ill look into this for you. it can definetly be done on a mill, however a lathe would be a bit...
Mastercam Editor or Cimco edit
in version 10 mastercam go
File, Edit/open external
Another thing is that with cutting hot rolled, that you have to take a heavier initial cut to break the scale as well or the cutting action will not be very nice for you and will most likely dull out...
Heres some post processors for mastercam version 9 and 10 including the 2400c control 4400c control and the lathe (d)y300 control as well as a generic v9 post for the dyna.
figured this would...
in mastercam, draw letters in 2d.
toolpaths, contour toolpaths
depth cuts, and use tapered wall, set your taper angle.
also works on pocket toolpaths. Same place, under depth cuts, enable...
Ive done some gibbs, some limited experience with proaxyz just kinda introductory stuff, but as you said the support is definetly awfula nd the help/tips for those features are pretty much non...
thems the principles of HSM
yeah thats what i would do, translate down and join. But as previously mentioned if you have solids, solid extrude would do it as well.
take text youve made in any other program pretty much, but one that uses vectors would probably work best, make a drawing of the letters in the font you want, export it as a DXF or something like...
create your text, then select toolpaths, contour toolpaths, under your selection menu, select box, then put a box around your text to select it all, then enter, and go through the toolpath options as...
heres a link to a video of a troichoidal toolpath.
right click and save as

the toolpath sort of continually loops around in a circular motion as it feeds into the material. so its sort of constantly making circular interpolation as it feeds in a somewhat linear motion. its...
troichoidal toolpath will give you excellent chip evacuation. You can run high speed with a fairly heavy depth of cut
a.) Mastercam can directly read solidworks files. simply file, open, select sldprt file from the drop down box, then select your file.
b.) machine type, mill/lathe/wire (whatever machine you...
I posted quite a while ago on this thread but anyways...

hey i am also in ottawa, i am working on something made from an old 70s looking semi auto pcb drilling machine. i think its gonna end up being something of a cnc dremel at first, gantry style, with...
perfect thanks. just for future reference does anyone know specs of a motor that would be alright for steel? i think im going to try (sometime somewhere in the future) to build a machine for steel,...
i was thinking up a design for my machine (i already have an xy table with no motors, and im building a z axis comumn for it, and i thought up an idea for a spindle motor. i have a mastercraft...
