Looking good Pete,
Did a similar glue test when building my machine. Found both the P U and epoxy worked very well if you gave the phenolic coating a 60 grit going over then an acitone clean...
Hey bright-lights,
Cool guitar, the bridge tuner setup is interesting. Dont take any of my comments to heart
Playing an instrument that you built yourself is really satisfying
I have designed...
Hi all,
Finished up the short scale bass just in time for Xmas. Ended up going with a differnet body design with a paint finish as I had a few issues with the timber body blank
But it came out...
Thanks Pete.
Designed in Rhino, processed in cut3D as needed, then imported into VCarve Pro so I can layer up all the 2D and 3D together then output from one progam

Just a quick update for anyone thats interested
The CNC has been running issue free and I'm estatic at how much more accurate it cuts compared to my old Joes
A few pics of the current project...
Lol
Pete, I dips me lid to you.
Yes I did spell it incorrectly on purpose. You are the 1st in 11 years to pick up on that.;)

Belt drives are good. Had a 1st. generation Muticam 1/2 sheet CNC 30 odd years ago that was belt driven (had 10mm belts). It was a great little performer for its time. Only thing that let it down was...
Hi Pete,
Your a man after my own heart. sounds like one of my budget builds:)
From experience, having operated commercial routers before, If you want to be able to machine right out to the edges of...
Hi Pippin88
You have a good eye. The Aliexpress dust shoe does narrow down to about half the area of the 100mm pipe which I agree isn't ideal
But it is clearing the cut area OK and the duct work...
Have managed to find time to make a tidy little vac system for the CNC
Works via an overhead pivot arm that just swings back and forward as required.
All the crap goes through my home made cyclone...
Hi Rod,
Thanks.
The spindle is an air cooled 1.5Kw unit with an ER20 collet, driven by a HY 1.5Kw VFD purchased on Aliexpress
It's a bit small for this machine but it was originally purchased for...
Thanks Pete,
Your right they are never really finished, just machines we build for enjoyment/work that are in on going stages of development
This one is at the end of stage 1 development, So I'm...
Spent a couple of hours out in the freezer (AKA workshop) each night after work this week to tidy up all the little jobs that were left
Spoil board top is on and ready to level
Added a couple of...
Thanks InMesh
Thanks Pete,
From memory, I completed the Joes in 2011. So it's given me around 10 years of mainly hobby project / machining enjoyment.
It has been a very robust and reliable little...
Had a good day today, moved the spindle and VFD over to the new beast and am pleased to say it is all working as it should.
Even had time to tram the spindle to the table as well. Just need to...
Back in lock down (again) Go figure!
So it's back onto the Z axis issue. (Fun times). Did a heap more testing with both fresh reloads of mach3 and a different PC also ran the Z axis through my spare...
Bit despondent tonight.
Thought I would tidy up the steps per unit calibration only to find the issue with the Z axis has returned
No amount of messing with the pulse width and direction settings...
Time poor at the moment.:(
But have managed to complete repairs, make and paint the parts needed to get the C.O.W. sorted
So its ready to rock as of now, just need to finish off a bit of wiring...
Victory is at hand!:)
While I was convinced I had a fault develop on my breakout board, I tried Pippin88's suggestion of changing the pulse width on the direction for the Z axis
Magically it now...
Hi Pippin88
There is definitely a direction signal issue going on
Slowly working my way through everything and checking it off the suspect list
Will report back with the cause when I have sorted...
HELP:drowning:
Slowed to a stop as I have an issue with the Z axis
Despite working correctly when I first set it up ie: went up when the up button pressed went down when the down button pressed...
While my tidy up and to do list to finish off this puppy runs into 2 pages. The fact that it will reliably now move on all axis for me means the hard bit is done and dusted:cheers:
And you also know...
Hi InMesh,
Thanks for dropping past.
Hopefully for you, It should be a pretty straight forward change over on an existing machine.
I thought way too long about swapping over to a spindle from a...
Hi Pete
Thanks.
Yes the year barrier is always flexible and is either based on time available or spare cash to throw at it. But dam, it does come round quick.
Hi Sterob
No I'm not a fan of...
Well my high hopes of moving parts over Easter came and went as Wifey had other plans for me:(
But this weekend I had time to devote to making this bad boy move.
Smooth stepper set up went well...
Another job off the to do list.
Spoil board base strips sealed and fitted and hold down track installed.
The base strips will get a layer of black 5mm PVC board glued to it and that will then get...
Finally have had time to get back on the cnc build
Control box wiring is completed apart from a couple of switches I have ordered
AC side all tested and working as advertised
limit switches,...
Hi Mactec54
Thanks for your input.
I have not wound any preload onto the linear bearings (I made sure the adjustment screws were loose) The only load on the bearings at this point would just be...
Finally pulled the finger out and picked up the slotted duct.
To celebrate the occasion, today I banged in all the AC side of the electrics
