  1. Re: Is there any actual upside to gear-free DC spindle motors?

Are you specifically referring to the brushless DC motors like the one you linked? I mostly see those type brushless motors on machines that either previously came with brushed variable speed DC...
  2. Re: Stripped the column cap head screws on g0704

When you drill the head of a bolt off you gradually reduce the cross section that is still holding the tension. As you get closer and close to breaking through the tension will release gradually and...
  3. Re: cheapest lathe / minimum spec to turn steel?

In the document it looks to me as if he is turning the entire length on a taper, hence the boring head installed on the tailstock. That is one method for taper turning. If he is indeed turning on a...
  4. Re: Stripped the column cap head screws on g0704

That's from a screen grab of a YouTube video I found. They do look nice.
  5. Re: Stripped the column cap head screws on g0704

Just for reference, these are the bolts the OP is talking about

  6. Re: Stripped the column cap head screws on g0704

Regardless, the bolt in question is recessed in a counterbore so you can't get an angle grinder on it to make a slot anyway.
  7. Re: Stripped the column cap head screws on g0704

It sounds as if the hex that the allen wrench fits into is what is stripped. If that is the case then the bolt will still be under terrific torque.
  8. Re: Stripped the column cap head screws on g0704

Never going to be able to loosen a madly torqued 12mm bolt with a screwdriver slot. If he has that kind of access then the absolute easiest way is to weld the shank of a bolt to the existing bolt and...

Go buy a screw extractor set. They make them for SHCS.

  10. Re: CNC Mini series for beginners and Hobbyists

For a commercial venture, companies you do work for may have specific contractual agreements that would prohibit cloud based design storage.

For a hobbyist though, the only downside is if you are...

    Re: Treadmill motor/drive help

The X2 has that gear drive that can be replaced by a belt drive. I would highly recommend doing a belt drive conversion first. LMS and some others have kits, or there are plans for them floating...

What kind of machining are you talking about on these barrels?

    Re: Treadmill motor/drive help

Your X2 already has a DC motor, so you would essentially be swapping a DC motor for another DC motor. If you do it I would suggest getting one of the larger motors, over 2 hp, otherwise it probably...

    Re: Treadmill motor/drive help

Here is a picture of the exact board part number. It is the same one I have and it works fine with a POT. Don't forget to hook up a choke (The transformer looking thing). If you don't you can blow...

    Re: Treadmill motor/drive help

An MC-60 doesn't need PWM. A potentiometer supplies a voltage divider that works perfectly. I have one wired to a pot in my barn right now.

    Re: Treadmill motor/drive help

That is the number for a MC-60 treadmill motor controller. Do a google search or just look at this:

Re: Chinese GRBL Board End Limit Switches

NO switches are more prone to noise. Using NC switches is really no harder. All you have to do to use NC switches is invert the input in Grbl settings.
  18. Re: 6040 Break Out Board & Motion Controller Combined

Those machines usually have a parallel port BOB (No motion control) and require Mach3 or other on a PC. They usually come with a CD containing a cracked version of Mach3. With a PP Bob you can run...

    Re: Dual purpose CNC

You will need to verify that the pinout of this board is correct for the breakout board you are currently using. As far as "Being the same as Mach3", Mach 3 has software customizable pinouts so that...

Are the main power cables for the drivers wired in a star configuration from the power supply or are they daisy-chained. Should be star configuration.

    Re: Dual purpose CNC

Here is an old post from years ago where I show how I connected an Arduino running Grbl to a parallel port BOB. You would have to do the same but use the pinout from your board and what each pp pin...

    Re: Dual purpose CNC

If you are running through a parallel port breakout board you can simply connect the wires from a, old parallel port cable to the Arduino without the need to change anything.

    Re: Buying first metal lathe

I'm not sure I would recommend this to someone who knows basically nothing about lathes and turning. There is a lot of good equipment out there and and lot of essentially scrap metal too. Unless you...

    Re: Buying first metal lathe

As far as DRO's, they are very very nice to have on a manual machine of any kind but not 100% necessary. You would be amazed at what you can do on a lathe using a magic marker and a scale to provide...
