Has anyone actually bought SolidWorks for $400? There must be a catch. I couldn't tell from that web site. Student edition, maybe? The student editions that I've seen elsewhere are good for only...

Hoss,
He said the sale goes through February. I'm going to get it.
My only concern is that I haven't actually used the drawing features and that's what I want it for. I've seen one of yours,...
Ray,
Thanks. I'm aware of what the web-site says, but when my trial ran out and I was "downgraded" 3 of the 5 feature icons became disabled. What's left is "Create a Part" and "Combine Parts..."...
But, don't you give up those nice drawings with dimesions when the trial ends? Or, am I missing something?
Thanks for the feedback!
- Don
Hi Hoss,
What's your take on Alibre now that the 30 day trial is over?
I've been playing with it, but my trial ran out before I ever really got serious. I never got around to using the drawing...
Gene,
Thanks for the reply.
I was under the impression (from reading other threads here) that the eMachineShop DXF exports weren't usable. Are you saying that they are, as long as the...
I've been using emachineshop to design parts that I make on my manual mill. Now, I want to outsource the machining to a local shop. So, I need drawings with dimensions. I've been fiddling with...
Robin,
Very nice work.
I've been playing with a similar idea, but took the approach of grabbing the position after it has been processed by the DRO. Your way is MUCH better. Also, buffering...
Menzies,
What they said! Sorry I didn't notice your post sooner.

The Jim Beam will come in handy!
It sounds like you may be thinking that there's still some gearing going on inside the spindle box after the belt conversion. There isn't. Two stationary gears stay on the spindle but they don't...
I saw the flange in that picture, but I wasn't sure that the picture was of your hardware.
Did yours come with the flange on the ballnut? If so, this is going to be much easier for you. I went with the Hoss/Stirling approach, but to me, the Syil actually looks easier. I chose the...
That should be pretty close, but it may take some trial and error because it depends on how far back you place the shim(s) how much you torque the bolts, etc.
- Don
Do you have a .003 shim?

[QUOTE=twocik;371438]"I used a 0.002" feeler gauge for a shim and got lucky the first time.
Do you have any pictures of what you used ? Kind of new to machines and tooling. :)"
Here are a...
Phil,
I had this on my X2, also. I just fixed it, yesterday. Mine was off by about 5 thou from the front of the table to the back. I loosened the three screws that hold the column pivot-plate...
[QUOTE=Micro Rotors;368855]What, is this a secret? 74 views and nothing ...... :confused:
Come on guy's lets see-em.
I'm looking, too!
Sweet. Thanks for sharing it.
Forbidden,
This (PDF below) might help. It's from the manual for the MicroStep driver board from EAS here:

Check out the site. There's a menu on the left...
JoeRom,
I agree with Bones.
I'm sure there are tons of people that will want to read about your conversion, but it's too tedious moving back and forth. If it's all in one thread, anyone can...
Nice job, Joerom!
Are your motor mounts solid blocks of aluminum?
Charlie,
Not to my knowledge. But, Hoss sure makes it easy to order the raw materials - what with vendors' part numbers and all.
It would be really nice just to get the pieces that need the...
In preparation for my CNC conversion, I installed the LMS belt drive kit. I'd read it was a 20 minute job, but mine was more like 2 hours. The threads on the spindle were mangled, as though someone...
Thanks, guys.
I think I understand enough, now, to make the right choice.

Does anyone know of a tutorial on how to select the right stepper motor for an X2 conversion?
I don't mean just the torque requirements. Rather things like resistance, inductance, number of...
I shopped for weeks trying to find a new notebook computer running XP because I didn't want to strugggle to get my proprietary software to run on a new platform. I still have nightmares about...
Well, you are going to want to take it apart to clean and lube it. So, why not carry it in in pieces?
Thanks for the link, HayTay!
ProgeCAD is now up and running on my computer.
Thanks for the welcome aboard, too. It's good to be here - nice group of people.
- Don L.
ProgeCAD LT has been discontinued and it's replacement isn't available for download, yet. Meanwhile, those of us trying to get our feet wet for free are left in the lurch.
Is there anyone out...
