It would be much easier to do a Block O!! :) :O
Go Bucks!!
I'm going to be working on Al's temp control for this furnace. I overheated it a couple times and the elements got brittle. Right now we are moving so I'll work on it when we get to Tennessee.
Here's a short video of my machine running. A little Beethoven instead of motor noise.

There are 2 120 volt elements wired in series for 240 volt.
I had an old Powerstat on it but I took it off because it's only rated for 7 amps, I had a larger one somewhere, I just can't find it....
I have a place I can get large Reostats.I plan on using a bank of 3 or 4 of them with a rotary switch to step up the resistance. I tried it with one huge one that had slides on it, it got very hot...
This is the Brass melt. The pour is taken one handed while trying to avoid the zinc fumes. The crucible is from Legend Mining supplies.

Well after almost 3 1/2 years I got busy on the hobby CNC machine. Finished wiring it up and mounted the router motor. I got tired of waiting on tools from cyberspace so i ground of the end of a...
A few weeks ago I built a small electric furnace for melting less than 10 pounds of Aluminum. I got the elements from e-bay and bought the firebrick used. This is actually the second one I built, the...
I don't know if I can be any help, having trouble picturing your problem. For no fill in an area the usual fixes are, more heat in mold and metal, more head pressure, and usually the most important,...
That's great, I thought I had the PDF saved but couldn't find it. I saved it now.
They are pretty simple to build. Get the tuyere height correct is the hardest part. Too high and the Iron will...
So it's the foam board like for crafts. That's only about 1/4" thick, is that how thick the rabbit is? That stuff is pretty tough, you could probably make a ram and pull pattern. Just seal the edges...
But, it's got a carrot sticking out of it's ..... OH, that's to stake in the ground.:o:banana:
I've bought several things from Legend, no complaints. Their clay crucibles are inexpensive and work great for Aluminum. I got a six pack the last order.
If this is for a one time pour. Since Aluminum is one of the easiest metals to melt, you could just set up some charcoal with a small blower and put the Aluminum in a stainless steel pot.
Sorry, I misread your post. I thought you were going to use it as a pattern in greensand or petrobond.
Cement should work OK for a pattern. You'll have to seal it up with some paint so the surface won't stick to the sand. It may be a little heavy. I've used wood and bondo(2 part auto patch material)....
By Ali he just meant your Aluminum will get gas bubbles that may show up in the casting.
You could coat the part with drywall mudd and let it dry, then pour acetone (fingernail polish remover will...
Very nice set-up. I've used loose sand and greensand for foam, I kind of prefer the greensand. It has a better finish. You could always coat with drywall mud but then you have to wait on it to dry.

New, it was over $7600 if it a vacuum mixer. I'm sure there would be someone interested in it. You may have to chec out a jewelery forum.

Pure talc may be a little better, no oils or perfumes. Also, Brick dust, coal dust or powdered graphite can be used. I use a powder Alum and graphite and it works very well for me..so far. I have...
What kind of regulator are you using? You need 5 to 10 pounds pressure. If you are using one from a bar-b-cue, it isn't near enough pressure. If you have a high pressure reg then you might need to...
I got a high pressure propane regulator at the farm supply store. I think it was around $20, I had to buy a hose and a gauge. That brought it up to around $40. When the tanks gets low, it starts...
Looks pretty good. What size is the bore and what size drum is that? I don't know if that blower will have enough pressure to work well for you. Squirrel cages don't seem to like much back pressure.
Copper will easily disolve into molten Aluminum. No need to heat it to Copper's melting point. I have made Aluminum Bronze, but not anything with Mg.
I think they look great. It would have been nice to had some personal instruction when I started out. Still would be nice, cuts down on stupid mistakes.
Hey DeadTom, I'm Jammer on the BYMC. I couldn't get that handle here.
I used a commercial refractory Mt Savage Superheatcrete 32, 3200 F castable. I found a local guy that sells it. Last I checked...
I kind of threw together a small furnace to start out. It will melt about 5# Al. It's just a small freon tank I got from the HVAC guys at work....
I have bought some stuff from Legand Mining, Never had any complaints.
Foundry 101 is great instructional site. I made my own furnaces, for me, that was part of the fun.
I've never bought anything...
